I just got back from Alaska a few days ago. Right now the Reds are running like crazy in the Kenai River. If I were you, I'd rent a car and drive to Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula. It's a gorgeous 3 hour drive from Anchorage, and worth it. Hire a guide and and tell them you want to fish for Reds - I saw lots of guides fishing for Kings and it looked boring and unproductive. Take the 8wt and sinking line, though you may not need it. I'd guess the guides will have their own specialized rigs you can use. I used both fly and spin rigs with equal success. There are fish processors in town that will clean, filet, freeze, and package your fish in a box that Alaska Air will let you check for $20. I have about 20lbs of red salmon chilling in my freezer. Some of the craziest, best fishing of my life.
Good luck, and post your story-

I have the weekend between week one and two off so was hoping to go fishing. I've only fly fished one other place besides the DMV area and had marginal success. Do any of you have experience in that area for the time frame. Can you provide some suggestions on what I should take as far as rods or flies. I read online that the silvers should be running but have no experience with salmon on the fly. Any pointers or advice will be greatly appreciated.--I have a 6 and 8 at rod that I can take.
