Hello Tom and fellow TPFRs,

I just wanted to give a brief fishing report to you all on my trip to Cape Cod Chatham this past weekend.  I had only 1 morning with it was very productive and waded out on my own since I could not connect a guided trip with Will Raye.  I caught more than 10 stripers, sizes ranging from 12 inches to 24 inches at Brewster flats at Paines Creek. The 24 inch striper was a bit hard to handle to manage a pic, without risking a safe release. The Clouser minnow olive on white size 1 or 2 hooks (it should be 3-4 inches long if possible) that I tied to imitate sand eels was a major hit. Thanks Tom for the info and connection to Will Raye.  Thanks Will (cc’ed on this email for anyone interested in connecting with Will) being so kind to share the very helpful information for a successful trip. I am happy to share what I learned and where to go with anyone who wants head up to Chatham, MA for fishing this summer.

I have taken a fly fishing trip out of Chatham the last two summers with a guide named Will Raye http://www.capecodflats.com/ 

Have had an absolute blast both times. He will put you on schoolies till you get tired of reeling them in. Then you can sight fish the flats for the big fish. He will push the boat around and you can see schools of big striper swimming toward the boat and cast to them. Some of the most fun striper fishing I have done.

If he is booked or you are looking for more DIY then take a water taxi out to some of the islands or I have also seen fly fisherman walking into Morris island.

Getting out on a boat is the way to go though and Will is highly recommended.

I had the opportunity to fish the Chatham- Brewster area about 11-12 years ago. Couple of things- the Chatham Area boats will take you out to a drop off at their drop point and then you can walk sort of East towards mouth of the channel. In this area if you happened to stick a striper you might suddenly find yourself chumming for seals. If you see a lot of seals you might consider fishing somewhere else although the seals usually swim and feed where the fish are. North of Chatham are the flats inside the cape. I found public parking back in that area (see the attached map) couple  of things to note if you wade  inside the cape. First and most importantly take a compass. At the water's edge before you start waiting out shoot a bearing so that you know that a hundred eighty degrees from that bearing will get you back to shore. I would not depend totally on your phone.  This is so when the fog rolls in you have some idea how to get back to shore. There is no crashing surf to follow the sound back to shore. Wading in the fog is a little disconcerting. You might consider also taking an inflatable PFD just in case. There is a six to eight foot tide in that part of the cape. You need to wade out at low water and you might have a 2 hour window to fish.

One thing to consider on the Cape is beach access. Many beaches are residents only. Most of the others are ~$20 to park. My experience is mainly mid Cape (town of Barnstable and Yarmouth). 

You generally can't fish at most of the beaches if they're touristy, so find whatever backwoods areas you can, or plan for dawn and dusk if you hit some of the more populated areas. But, inlets and most jetties will generally be ok if you have to fish during the day - just may not be a ton of action.

If you're staying in Chatham, I don't recommend Sandwich. You're in peak tourist season, and that drive could take WAY longer than Google Maps tells you now.

Well, I haven't been there...yet.  I am going there for the first time next week and hope to wade fish Monomoy myself.

I did find a shuttle service to North Monomoy for $30 http://outermostharbor.com/services/beach-shuttle/.  They take you out in the morning and pick you up at 4:30 pm.  Hopefully I will have a Monomoy report for you in a week.

I too am interested in advice on wading the Brewster flats, so thanks to all for the info.

Also, can anyone steer me to a good night fishing spot?
