Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salt lake

Ended up at Mirror Lake. I have to say I've had more solitude during the shad run on the Potomac than I did at this lake. However, everyone was really laid back and I have never seen trout attack a foam ant as aggressively as a bass on the top water bite. Numerous fish going airborne.

I lived in Colorado for 10 years and I have never seen so many people in a national forest at one time. Was funny, on the drive up you could smell the pines and on the drive out all you could smell was all the camp fires.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

The water was really brown where it meets the Potomac, but it's pretty damn crystal clear around the outflow.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Zealand South Island

Hey Greg,

Definitely willing to fill you in on my experience vancamping. Personally I think it's the best way to see the South Island. My gf and I did a couple nights at Airbnbs as well to do laundry or just have space to relax. Almost all of the kiwis we met were super friendly and our airbnbs were perfect for our needs.

My girlfriend is a near novice in regards to fly-fishing so Casey spent alot of time working with her and she improved alot as the day went on. Just let him know what both of your guy's levels of experience are.

I'll bring the book to the next beer tie and see you there.

Tight lines,

Andrew R

Andrew, I am excited to hear you did a van camping trip!  I would love to pick your brain on not just fishing, but the trip in general!  We are planning on flying into Queenstown, so Casey may be on the clock shortly.  Do you think he would be good with a beginner who really only has roll casting down?

I'll definitely be at the next beer tie and would love to chat and take you up on that book offer!

Okay Folks, So I am in the early stages of planning a South Island Honeymoon in December and of course would like to do a little fishing.  Of course I'd love this trip to be only fishing with helicopters, backpacking, and camping, but as this is a honeymoon with somebody who only humors my addiction, I'd probably only do a one day guide and recreation DIY on the side of the road.  We are doing a camper van and driving around with no destinations set in stone yet, so any recommendations would be great.

Also, as much as I like catching, I actually enjoy seeing her catch fish more. I know NZ is pretty technical and she is very much a beginner, but if there are any recommendations for place and guides that specialize in the beginner, that would be great.  After all, the Trouts rec in Colorado was great for that and she scored the fish of the day!

Thanks guys,

Gregg

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cincinnati not New Zealand

I would try fishing the tail waters of the Corps' lock and dams near Cincinnati. I believe there are facilities upstream and downstream. This is not the best time of year but there are white bass and hybrids below many of those facilities. Some have fishing platforms or wing walls you can stand on. I had great success at the RC Byrd facility upstream of Cincy with conventional gear one April. Fly gear is tricky with all the rip rap but something to at least consider.

If faced with the choice of only one, I'd definitely take the 5.  You'll want the bigger line in wind if you're in the Uintas.  If you are fishing the rivers, you'll want the 5.  The 5 just gives you more options.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salt lake

If you are fishing the Uinta lakes I mentioned, you wouldn't wade.  You would generally walk the shoreline and fish to cruising fish (don't forget polarized glasses).  You can also just blind cast if you see activity or just fishy looking places.  In many of the lakes, the grayling and cutts are cruising around really close to shore.  The tigers are often very close also, often with nose pointed toward shore--I assume for terrestrials.

If you are fishing the Provo or the Weber, well, the water is cold, no doubt about it.  As a kid, I wet-waded those slippery rocks and would get out and thaw every now and then, but you can also find space on the bank.  They are not big rivers, though waders would help you position yourself better.  I last fished the Weber a couple of Thanksgivings ago and did not have waders.  I found plenty of places to fish from the bank.

If you have the time, I'd hit those Uintas lakes and fish from shore.  Beautiful country.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Hilton Head Guide

Was jush down there.  I used Bay Street Outifitters.  I am forgetting the guides name.  It sounded very Irish. Shannon O'somehthing.  We tried to find reds on the flats.  Knowing the tide wasnt in our favor, but gave it a shot. He seemed to really know his stuff and tried his best to get us on some fish.  Saw a few at the end of the day, made some rough casts.  All in all, id do it again.  The scenery of the SC flats was something i never knew existed.  was amazing how alone we were out there.

+1 on the LLBean Streamlight reels. Mine has handled steelhead and bonefish with no complaints.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Zealand South Island

Hey Greg,

I went down there with the girlfriend for two weeks of vancamping across the South Island a few months back (been meaning to post a report for awhile just haven't gotten around to it.)

In terms of guides on the South Island, are you planning to get down towards Queenstown? Maybe all the way down to Dunedin? Gore, which is about halfway between the two, is considered the "Brown Trout Capital of the World". The Mataura River was the one I went out on and the fishing was fantastic. We went out with a really good guide, Casey Cravens. He's an American based out of Dunedin but he's been fishing all across the South Island for 20+ years, highly recommend, he's a super fishy guy who knows the NZ style of fly fishing really well.

In terms of DIY fishing, I fished a few other days just in the late evening as we set up camp and had good luck. I have a great book on fly fishing the South Island that you're welcome to borrow (I'm not exactly planning to head back to NZ anytime soon). It's got the low down on basically every single trout stream in the entire South Island. I can bring it to the next beer tie if you want to borrow it.

Tight Lines,

Andrew R

Gregg

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Kayak recomendations

I'm with TB on this one. I have both canoes and kayaks. If you will be single handing in moving water, you want a canoe. And a light one. I have a Wenonah Angler 15 and it is sub 50 pound royalex type boat. Indestructible and I wouldn't think twice about carrying it a mile on my shoulders. I have had heavy boats and you simply won't use them if you can't comfortably load and unload one by yourself. This particular boat is perfect for moving water as it has no keel and if you flip the boat around or kneel in the center it single hands better than a kayak on moving water IMHO. If you learn all your strokes, you can single hand with a canoe paddle or cheat and use a kayak paddle. It fishes two people with gear really well, but it won't handle too much weight (like I wouldn't plan on a multi-night overnight with 2 people using this boat). You won't find a kayak that can take 2 people that is as easy to single hand. It is really designed for fishing in mind. Beamy and great secondary stability. You can lean the gunnel clear down to the water with no trouble. It's initial stability is a little twitchy and takes some getting used to, but that is what makes it responsive on the water.  It also performs nearly as good as a whitewater boat. I couldn't think of a better craft for the the rivers in the area.

I also own a Hobie Pro-Angler 12. I absolutely love it. I once thought pedals were a gimmick, but now I won't own a kayak without them. But I only use it in saltwater and only spin fish out of it. It weighs way too much to be car topped. I mean I have, but since we have 4 of them in the family, I now have a trailer that holds all 4 for our Mexico trips. I would not fly fish out of it. You sit too low to the water and, as TB said, it is super hangy/snaggy particularly because of the pedals. I absolutely love it for ocean fishing though with conventional tackle. I will regularly do 10-15 miles a day in Mexico and there is no easier way to cover miles and keep your hands free. I've landed some huge fish out of that boat and have been hooked to massive things I never saw. But it is well over 100 pounds and, even with two people, it is incredibly difficult to put on top of a full size truck.

I have read up on a few but again, I just don't know enough about it to make a decision.  I don't want to break the bank but also want to get something that will last and fits what I'm looking to do. I have looked at the bass pro ascend, cabelas advanced angler, as well as the nucanoe frontier line and free lure. all seem nice but would love some input. Any other suggestions are welcome!!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Kayak recomendations

I would take a look at Ocean Kayak Prowlers. I know that you didn't mention Saltwater at all within any of your post but honestly, OK prowlers are great boats for all environments. I have done numerous float trips in mine as well as taken it to fletchers a few times so it fits the bill for everything suggested.

It's also a light boat and is 100% sea worthy if you ever hit the coast. I got my OK prowler around 2007 or 2008 and it's still going strong. The only downside to a prowler is that at times, it can be a bit tougher to stand in. That being said, I can't think of a single situation in the mid Atlantic region in which you would be required to stand up to cast to a fish.

I did end up getting another kayak last year -- an old town predator. I hated it. I ended up trading it with a buddy for an ATAK (which I like a lot more) but it's a much heavier boat and not the cheapest one. My biggest complaint with the predator was that it paddled terribly, would often get caught in wind and at times felt like I was taking the local tugboat out for a paddle.

Quite the delayed response, but I went up and wet waded the Potomac portion right across from Great Cacapon a few weeks ago.

Wollybuggers and white clousers worked well for smallies up there. They were on the smaller side, but a couple fun fights and some cool scenery. Hope your trip was successful, would love to here how floating the Cacapon went!

If you want to catch the big smallmouth, my advice is to cast in the aforementioned shaded and/or spots very near to structure ("fishy" spots) out in front of the canoe.  If you can plot a huge popper or streamer in front of the fish before they're aware of you, you get more hook-ups.  Aside from that, just get out there a lot and experiment until you find what works and/or what makes you happy.  If you like to "beach" the canoe and drift a small woolly bugger through some sections with big redbreast sunfish instead of trying for 2-3 big smallies per trip, go for it.  If you want to squeeze the belly of a fallfish to hear it gurgle, go for it.

I'm happier catching 50+ fat sunfish than I am having shots at 2-3 big smallies.  My wife tends toward the latter and calls my pursuit of sunfish "fishing for children" ;).  Both are acceptable.
