How was this application denied? I mean seriously what better project could possibly exist in DC?

Below is an update many of us likely received from FFC. They are still working hard to get the project done and are about a quarter of the way there for fundraising phase 1. As you'll read, there's been a set back in a grant denial but they are appealling the decision.

| | March 1, 2017 An Update to Our FFC Supporters In August of 2016, Director Tommy Wells of the DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) partnered with the Friends of Fletcher's Cove (FFC) group and committed to help in our effort to identify and pursue funding for the sampling and characterization of cove sediment. A DC Fish & Wildlife Request for Applications for "projects to increase boating access for recreational boaters to the waterways of the District of Columbia" was issued on October 14, 2016 with a deadline of December 5, 2016. Unfortunately, our application was denied this past February. If successful, it would have secured federal funds for up to 75% of the project cost, potentially tripling our donations collected to date. Of course, missing out on this opportunity is disappointing. FFC has appealed the DC Fish & Wildlife decision. Our appeal letter points to the many months of consensus building undertaken last year to prepare for an essential maintenance dredging of Fletcher's Cove: "Many FFC stakeholders have worked hard to create and submit the application for a grant from the Fisheries and Wildlife Division, which identifies the critical and required first step in restoring public access to the Potomac River via Fletchers Cove. The application was presented after being vetted by members of the National Park Service, United States Geological Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, US Fish & Wildlife, Army Corp of Engineers, C&O Canal Trust, and other members of the community." DOEE Director Tommy Wells continues to support our cause and is committed to helping us identify and secure funding for this work. Sustainable public access to the Potomac River at Fletcher's Cove is imperative for the continued enjoyment of the river's rich natural and historic resources. The FFC core mission remains focused on the creation of a long-term remediation plan after the successful completion of a near-term cove dredging. The federally required sediment and soil testing must come first and the expected cost for this work is $160,000. Our private fundraising began in earnest in 2015 and we have raised $33,000 to date. In order to maintain momentum we need your help in identifying new grant sources or donors. Please visit our recent events page to view documents pertaining to the grant application and a chronology of all FFC achievements. Contact us should you know of any funding sources that would support our cause. If you are able to contribute, our donation link is here. Thanks for your continued advocacy and support. We hope to see you soon on the river! Mike Bailey, Spokesperson | | | | | | | | | | | | |
