I was on business trip in MN last week. I had free 2 days to visit a friend. He took me to Rainy lake - huge lake. We had no idea where to start but looking for weeds/rat root in some bays.

Pikes usually are hiding in weed area. I caught few of them 20-25" - float line with pike bunny fly.

On the last day we were at the shore on one of the islands and the shore has rock walls and rock bed - about 11 to 12 feet down. His device showed some small fish symbols down at rock bed - 10 to 11 feet down. I assumed that they might be smallies or baby walleyes. we were trying to catch walleyes. I changed my line to fast sink line with about 2" clouser. I casted it out to about 40-45 feet, waited counting to 10 seconds - let sink line down to bottom, then pulling the line. After 5th cast, the rod suddenly was pull down hard and the line was liking to dance on the water. I was liking "oh big walleye... maybe...".  After 2 minutes, my friend saw it on the surface and said "PIKE!!!!" Oh crap!! I did not add the wire tippet. I had to be careful to pull/reel in easy. After 5 minutes tug of war, Yaya the baby was in net!!

Why pike was in there? I assumed that the monster pike was waiting quietly in there  and catch any fishes swimming by.

The best monster northern pike size - 35.5 inches! Maybe 12 to 13 lbs. You guys should go there soon! =)
