I've spent this spring exploring the Brook Trout waters of Shenandoah National Park and caught my first Native a few weeks back in the Rapidan River. I've since fished the Rose, Robinson, Hughes and today I switched over to the western slope and fished Jeremy's Run. Everything I've read about Jeremy's said it's a great stream but terribly crowded on weekends. Today I fished from the lower trail head, hiked about a mile up before I started fishing and didn't see another fisherman. I only saw one other person on the trail. I hooked 3 brookies and managed to loose all of them before getting them to the net. Then I was chased off the stream by a thunderstorm. I plan on going back soon, I enjoy everything that goes along with chasing natives.
On my way back towards Front Royal on Rte. 340 I saw a random public boat launch sign and decided to stop and take a look. It was the Gooney Run launch at the confluence of Gooney Run and South Fork of the Shenandoah. The lot was full with parties filling beer coolers and inflating inner tubes in preparation for their float trips. I met a fly fisherman on his way off the river who said he caught 3 smallmouth. He then gave me the best fishing report I think I've ever heard. "The thing about this place, even if the fishing is bad, the bikinis are good". I looked around and have to say he was right. That was all the intel I needed and I had my 6 weight in the car. So after the lunch special at Jailesco Authentic Mexican Cuisine (great food) I returned and pounded the river with a wooley buggers and a hellgrammite pattern. I didn't get so much as a look from a bass or sunfish. However, I did catch my first Rainbow Trout that measured about 15 inches. I assume it washed out of one of the stocked tributaries, it shouldn't have been there in the warm water but I'm glad it was. This is my second year fly fishing and first targeting trout. Brook trout and Rainbow trout down, now to find a Brown.
