Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Digest for tidal-potomac-fly-rodders@googlegroups.com - 13 updates in 7 topics

Hey, Andrew, if you have a canoe or kayak there's a nice float from Yellow Spring down to the Rt 50 bridge. Smallmouth, rock bass, fall fish, sunnies, carp, etc.

I am an avid fly fisherman but I am new to the area. I will be here for
roughly three months and do not have anyone to fish with. I am really
wanting to get out on the water but don't know the area good enough and
don't know where the good fishing spots are. Starting Friday June 20th I
would like to try to get out on the water every weekend till August rolls
around. I have a car so transportation is not a problem. So if anyone is
lookin to go out soon, I am all in.

Welcome to the group Clarke! You won't be disappointed with your options
around here. We've got a little bit of everything....and then some. Hit me
up if you want to get out there this weekend.

Hey there. I was out on the Tidal Basin this afternoon catching some smallies, scaring off some carp, and attracting tourists.

What interested me most were some gar breaking the surface during the incoming tide near the ohio dr bridge. I threw some wooly buggers at them for about 20 minutes before biking home, but their defiance has now made them the next species I want to add to my fly list. (I caught a small gar on a spin reel when I was younger).

I was hoping to get a bit of information on what flies might work for these guys, what leader and tippet is best, and how deep or shallow I might expect a bite. I've done a bit of research on older posts, and realize rope flies are most common. With that I've also seen the warnings of bringing gloves and scissors. Are their scales actually that sharp? What other than the rope fly will incite some aggression?

Any info is great! I plan to be out there again tomorrow after 4 also, and welcome partners.

    Thanks!

    Forrest

The lock at Swains lock holds fish, but it is a bit of a challenge to cast
down 8ft and get a good drift.
I hooked a decent sized smallmouth in the river at Swains Lock last fall
but it popped free after a few minutes of fighting and 3 rounds of
acrobatics. The campground looks nice. It is first come first serve, so
you might want to get there early in the day if you are going on a
Saturday, especially with how close it is to the city.

    Hey Andrew -
I've only fished the Cacapon once, but upstream where it crosses Route 50
in Capon Bridge. It was extremely wadeable there. I set some kind of
personal record with fallfish and creek chubs that day, caught some
smallmouth too. Potomac River Smallmouth is doing a float trip on June
27/28 (overnight optional), I'm on the 27th portion if you want to email me
I can give you more details.

    Bruce,

I've been wanting to fish the Savage for a little while now. Do you have to
use campsites there or is it more like back country camping? I would
really prefer to make my own camp somewhere.
