If you find weed mats drop a topwater fly into any holes in the mat, give it a pop or a twitch, and hold on.  Otherwise, I find it generally best to try to run your fly over the top of the weeds.  Select a fly and retrieve based on the depth of the weeds.  Go topwater if there is too little room between weeds and surface.  Also, mono weed guards can be a life (and fly) saver and are pretty easy to tie.
