Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} What kinda leader for snakehead

I throw steel leaders, and rarely have them break until ive had many fish on.  but id have to think a heavy fluro would work well too.  Like a 25lb test.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Estes Park, CO

If you fish stillwater, don't forget griffith's gnats and renegades in medium to small sizes. Deadly on Rocky Mtn stillwater. Also get some chironmid imitations for the stillwater.

Drew,

Trent Jones and I fished out there last year in July (report here). We mostly backpacked in RMNP to fish the alpine lakes, but also hit the Big Thompson inside the park and a little stream running through a campground right down the road from the YMCA. On the Big Thompson, we fished large ants, caddis, and mayflies, which all worked pretty well for the 8-12" browns, brookies and cutbows (as well as a 16-18" brown that broke me off in a bush). The other little creek in the campground was loaded up with brookies, and I would bet those creeks around the YMCA are as well. I would also walk out to the lake at the YMCA in the evening, hang out for a few minutes and see if you spot any rising fish, if so, throw some ants or other little dry flies to them.

If you have time to spend a few days in the park, I would recommend buying Steve Schweitzer's A Fly Fishing Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park, which lists every body of water in the park and the species (or complete lack) of trout contained in them, which we found extremely helpful while planning our trip.

Have a great trip and report back if you can.

These subsidized spots are available on a first come, first served basis.  Please use this thread to coordinate who is available to fish the tournament together and to build a second team.  It really doesn't matter whether you know each other or not.  By the time you fish together for 18 hours you'll be old pals!  Boats and/or personal watercraft are encouraged but not required.  It would be cool to see several of the SUP crew that have been getting together lately on a team.

Due to the short time frame, registrants may have to pay the full $60 in advance, but I can repay the $30 at the kick-off event.  Looking forward to seeing another TPFR team emerge.  As far as I'm concerned, the more flies in the water all night, the better!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New Reel Recommendation

I have an LLBean streamlight ultra large arbor reel that I like a lot (I have the largest size, in an 8/9).  Reels was ~$90 and spools are about $50.  Holds a good amount of line and has treated me well so far, though I've had it less than a year.  Also the warranty is pretty much unbeatable.

We both fished salt with it and neither of us took much care of it. I don't think I've ever fully broken it down for a cleaning.

What happened to it is the knob that you turn to tighten the drag now turns more than it used to and has a new clicking noise about every half rotation of the knob, and no drag is ever applied. I don't know exactly what happened, but I noticed the problem when I went to make my first cast on a jetty last week. I went to strip some line out rather forcefully, and the spool just spun, resulting in myriad loose coils around the spool and a healthy amount of tangles.

Ross sounds like they will most likely be able to repair it. My guess is some threads are stripped somewhere in there. Either way, I was kind of hoping it was totally kaput, as I've been looking for a reason to buy a bigger reel. I transferred two lines to a Orvis BBS V last night so I can fish while I shop around.

I have had good luck with buying reels off ebay or discontinued models on clearance.  The following are my observations, your mileage may vary and I don't want to start flame wars.  Many people buy top end gear and then just don't use it much.  Newish gear is still expensive, but top end reels from 10 years ago are relatively cheap and you can choose the reels that have stood the test of time.  Also, larger reels end up cheaper on the used market, since small/trout reels are more desirable (except when it comes to Abel reels).  If you are willing to buy an Non-large arbor reel, the old Ross Cimmaron  C-3's have been going for really cheap.

When going this route, I would buy 2 reels or buy a reel with multiple spools at the same time.

I'll be using it in salt water some, but mostly fresh water. Disc drag is non-negotiable, but I'm open to any brand. So far, I've been looking at some of the Redington and Albright reels, but I really only started perusing this morning. Tall order, I know, but someone here probably has some good ideas and advice.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Snakehead Tournament Participation Challenge - $ubsidies Available!!!!!!

Well I am down if we can pull some people together. As far as boats go I have a kayak for myself and a spare kayak to lend to someone if they are interested in joining. It is not really outfitted to carry flyrods but I have made it work before. I also have a fishcat 9 single person pontoon boat that I am willing to lend out if someone feels like messing with that. Very stable just a pain in the but to set up. The only other thing is I don't know the tournament area at all. The whole potomac is fair game so I could show you guys where I have been getting em. But it would be on the Virginia side. Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Snakehead Tournament Participation Challenge - $ubsidies Available!!!!!!

For the team already together, are you guys gonna fish smallwood or return to the va side for more familliar waters? (obviously I'm not asking you to give away your plan. just in general whether you are going to fish from the tournament site or go elsewhere)

You can email me directly if you want. shauser@gmu.edu

While we already have one TPFR team fishing the tournament, it is a goal of ours to encourage more fly fishing participation in this event and others like it.  To this end, TPFR will subsidize 1/2 of the registration fee for a second team of up to 6 anglers (up to $30 each or $180 total).  Registration details, tournament rules, and schedule can be found on the tournament site here:  http://potomacsnakehead.com

See you all there!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Estes Park, CO

Dalton
