Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} First fly rod for 9yo son

First off, I am not an expert and never trained my son's in fly fishing.  On the Orvis Podcast, Tom Rosenbauer gets some version of the question frequently.  He always recommends a 9 ft rod.  Bottom line is that they are easier to cast than a shorter rod.  Tom also has a video on the subject of getting kids to fly fish.

Hi all - looking for advice on a first fly rod for my 9 yr old son.  Mostly trout fishing, perhaps small bass and panfish in local ponds.  Is it better to get a traditional 9' 5 wt or something a bit shorter to help with rod management.  He's not the most coordinated kid ever, so was airing on side of a bit shorter, esp since most of the rivers we fish are on smaller side.

Thanks!
