{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Where to fish today?

Started at the lot near Veronica's Bakery on the shore near the bike path. That seam along the rocks. Caught one there (lower end of that seam) and saw others but also saw 3 snakes and my wife got freaked out so we bailed from there. We walked down to the bridge without casting at all and came back up the trail on the 4MR park side... we went up and near the "Kingfisher" bird sign ( maybe 100yards past that little bridge) we stepped in a few places and fast from there for the rest of the time. Tons of activity on top and saw a bunch of fish within 10 ft of the shore that were a nice size. Caught one largemouth there and the catfish. Walked our way back from there without another cast.

Honestly given how much people have been saying it's been really bad there I was super surprised to see so many fish... with a bunch of really legit sized ones. Glad we made the trip!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Where to fish today?

My wife and I hit 4MR today around high tide. We really only fished like 90 min (and just walked some). We caught 2 largemouth 12-15inches and a channel cat that was about 20 inches. We saw tons of bass moving around (some monsters) and a lot of movement on top too. Fun little afternoon.

Last weekend the lot was closed but I was able to park in Palisades and walk down. It's easier to cross Canal now that there's a stoplight.

I carry pliers, "boga grips", and several trash bags. A net helps.

You can hit them ten times with an aluminum bat to the skull and it won't kill them. You can smash their heads with rocks and then stab their skull several times and it won't kill them.

Suffocating them in a bag works. Several trash bags will keep the slime contained and prevent their teeth from puncturing a single bag and getting out.

In June of '17 I drove from the Roosville MT border crossing to Dawson Creek then the Alcan (which doesn't start until you reach Dawson Creek) to the Alaskan Alcan Border crossing. To say we dawdled because of my having to find out if there were fish in the nearby stream is an understatement. It took us almost 4 weeks to get from US Border to US Border. I presume you have already acquired a copy of the MilePost and have selected your travel route. Within each route, section MilePost identifies fishable water. Watch out for the frost heaves. Will you camp along the way or try and stay in motels? This choice can determine how close you are to fishable water. You mentioned you were driving the U-Haul. Will you be towing a car? I primarily fished British Columbia, where I discovered US Citizens are considered Aliens and get to pay Alien license rates. I also fished through the Yukon, one of the best license rates. I did not fish Alberta because of the route we took.

As for fishing, I used a Cabela 4 piece 4wt outfit that I bought for something like $120.00. I swapped out Cabela's standard line for a known brand trout line. Most of the water I came across was in the 15-30 foot wide freestone mountain stream variety. I didn't use any of my heavier rods till I was fishing waters known to hold Salmon or Trout feeding off of the spawning Salmon.

My wife and I camped through Canada. My primary reference was Mike and Terry Church's Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping: Alaskan and Yukon Camping with RV or Tent. They highlighted fishable water near the campgrounds along the various routes to Dawson Creek and the Alaska Highway itself. I'm not at home at the moment so I'm working off faulty memory. I'll look at my fishing reference materials and camping journals for the trip when I get home and respond again.

I caught mostly Grayling under 8 inches. Remember they live in a very harsh and short growing season along the Alcan routes. One place that comes to mind is Buckinghorse River Wayside Provincial Park north of Fort St. John in British Columbia. The river was about 150 yards behind the campsite. Caught several grayling here downstream dead drifting a size 14 mosquito dry fly. Think medium size SNP Brookies.

Watson Lake is fishable and is a short walk from the community of Watson Lake.

Consequently I'll need to limit myself to 1 combo, and I doubt I could go beyond $150 for the whole thing; moving to Alaska is expensive, ya'll! I'd be interested in used as well as new sets, and I'd appreciate any feedback ya'll have. What weight would you look for? What maker? What rods? For a point of reference, my 6 weight is an Echo base, and I've been happy with it. At the least, I recognize that I can't blame the rod for my own casting flaws.

Ok this sounds a bit strange, but I am looking at fishing some of the
grassy areas and lily pads along the Potomac where snakeheads are known
to congregate. If I land one of these beasts, what do I need special to
actually handle them?
For bass, shad, panfish, etc, you just grab them by the lower jaw, but
this does not seem real intelligent for the snakeheads. (I may not be
real smart, but I am not stupid.) How do most people kill them if you
are going to keep them?

I just got done fishing the North Fork of the Shenandoah, poor visibility, and the flow seems to be ticking up. I'm guessing due to storms that were further south in the Valley last night. 72 degrees seems high for the South Fork. The North Fork is definitely not that warm right now.

So I've been down to 4MR about a dozen times since late February — I live about 5 minutes away — and I've definitely not seen anything like 80 people fishing simultaneously. I'm curious when that was happening, exactly.

The bite is not great but I'm not convinced it has anything to do with fishing pressure.

Not sure it's the same place. Year ago it held fish when helping with a merit badge program. There was a locked gate controlling access to the IWL area and the pond.

Hey all. My wife and I went to Bull Run Creek this Sunday for the first time. We walked along the shore and just used spinning rods (weren't sure what we were getting into with back casting space, etc.) with crayfish and perch rapalas. We probably caught 15 fish in 4ish hours... everything was under 12 inches with the majority being largemouth and a few larger perch with one sunnie tossed in there. I saw a lot of people catfishing and one guy said he regularly catches some in the 30+ inch range.

I was curious if anyone ever catches more sizable largemouths or other fish in there (besides the catfish). It was a pretty nice day and despite there being a lot of trash, it was a fun day for us. Just curious if there are bigger bass in there or if your experience was similar to mine.
