Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fish Lake, UT

I haven't fished Fish Lake, but most of those lakes are deep and trolling (by hand or motor, fly or conventional tackle) is the productive way to fish.

But I would definitely find some forest service roads that follow a creek and just find a place to fish these smaller creeks for trout in moving water.  Runnoff should be over by then given the drought they had down there.

If you want to explore the forest service roads, make sure to carry a paper map.  You get out of cell service fast down there.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Trip Report - North Branch Potomac River - Memorial Day Weekend 2018

Spent this past weekend fishing the Savage and floating the North Branch Potomac with some fellow TPFRers and friends.  Arrived on Friday evening and fished from 7:30 pm until dark and landed a nice brown trout.  On Saturday we floated Westernport to McCoole with flows hovering around 950 cfs.  We caught fish on double nymph rigs throughout the day and landed a nice rainbow on a crayfish imitation.  We were on the water from about 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and hustled up to the Savage to fish for the rest of the evening which included a few more fish brought to hand.  Both nights, the evening spinner activity on the Savage was very thick but didn't notice much activity on the North Branch during the day.  Flows on the Savage were right at 200 cfs all weekend.  We tried enticing a few rising fish on Saturday evening but to no avail, only on nymphs.  On Sunday we floated the Barnum stretch from Blue Hole down to town.  The dam was releasing in the 450-475 cfs range.  Although we didn't catch nearly as many fish as Saturday, the water level and weather were perfect all day and included views of about a dozen springs that transformed into waterfalls coming over hillside cliffs into the river.  On this trip, from all the springs and waterfalls, this stretch of river looked more like a spring creek than it's typical clear-self. We were on the water at about 11:30 am, reached the take out at 4 pm, and after a quick ride to grab the shuttle car, we were on the road shortly after 5 pm.

At the put-in on Saturday (Westernport) we spoke to a few guides waiting for clients.  They mentioned that a few river features below the paper plant had changed due to the recent high water and that a fishing vessel, maybe a raft (can't remember), recently flipped in the ledge rapid close to Speedy Mart/Gas Station towards to the take-out.  Apparently a rock shifted in the lower portion of the rapid and at lower flows could become an issue.  We noticed a few changes on a our float, mostly some of the regular down trees no longer in their typical spot or the odd rock no longer blocking a route but didn't notice the rock they mentioned likely due to the higher flow.    They also brought up river temps and fish mortality.  With temps in the 80's on Saturday, we kept a close eye on the water temps throughout the day with the highest reading being 66 degrees at the takeout.

Anyone planning to head up there to float in the coming months, take a thermometer to monitor river temps and above all else, be safe.

You can't get directly to Monomoy Island yourself. You have to either hire a guide or get a boat taxi. It's been too long since I've lived there, so not sure who's operating anymore. For flies, all you really need are chartreuse and white clousers and sand eel patterns for the stripers. An intermediate line would be ideal, but if you don't have it, float will work for Monomoy flats with heavier flies. Bring the sink tips anyway. If you fish the jetties, you'll want it.

Poppers are fun for the bluefish, but very situational to be able to use them. Bring steel leaders if you'll chase them.

If you're in Chatham on June 19, I highly recommend checking out the public hearing that is being held at the Chatham Community Center (6-8pm, 702 Main Street). They are considering proposed rules for the Atlantic herring fishery that will have a big impact on stripers, bluefish, and others including river herring and shad.

There's a hearing in Philly next week if anyone is in the area and interested in attending, shoot me an email.

The two I've caught on the fly have required very hard strip sets. Like, really really hard. Bony mouths make it tough.

Hook setting has been sort of mysterious to me. I watch bass anglers on TV feel the take, wait literally two seconds, then... yank! I don't understand why that amount of waiting is helpful because I assume the fish will spit it out by then.

Hi all, I have been fishing in new places lately and one such place is know for snakehead.  I have seen the snaggers out in force as of late but have not spotted any snakehead myself.  I'd like to try to target them on the fly and have been focusing my attention around mid day, falling tide.   The weeds are not in thick yet, so I've been looking around docks and rocks.

Those of you that have had success with these fish. have you noticed any specific times of days, tides, types of days to have consistencies in spotting/catching fish?

Thanks,

Back in 2010, I first heard of the story of Edwin Rist stealing rare bird skins from a British Museum to sell or use for Atlantic Salmon flies either on this google group or another fishing blog. The story was pretty intriguing or odd, as the primary "expensive" feathers I was aware of were chicken saddle hackles for dry flies and streamers. The story of this heist kind of fell off the map and was reignited in this new best selling book.

I thought the book was a great read and included tons of details on Rist, the heist, and speculation on the current status of his loot. There were a couple maddening ignorant references for fishermen, including a reference to salmon spawning and then dying while the book is actually written about flies for Atlantic Salmon--fish that spawn and return; but otherwise I very much enjoyed the tale.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Elk Springs Resort, Monterville, WV

Occasionally folks here will post about fishing the Elk River in West Virginia, at the Elk Springs Resort.  I went out there again for the Memorial Day weekend with my family, on what has become an annual trip, and had a really great time.  Little things change year to year, but the resort's main attraction -- its location right at the spot where the Elk emerges from the ground after running miles under the mountains, stays the same. The river is always cold, never frozen, chock full of insects and ideal trout habitat.  It's also carefully managed C&R and stocked with rainbows and browns, and man some of them are HUGE.  My biggest this weekend was pushing 20 inches and they have some significantly bigger.  Even the smaller ones can be tricky to fool, they put up a hard fight, and if you're not careful will get into fast water and put you into your backing before snapping off.

I wish I had some photos to share, but I am also glad I didn't have my cell on me as I slipped and took an unexpected freezing bath on two occasions.  :-)  So you'll have to take my word for it -- the fishing was great.  This time of year the Elk has big sulphur hatches in the evenings (and smaller ones all day long) and although Fri & Sat were not big, the river was covered with bugs just as the darkness fell on Sunday.  Everyone in our party, including my kids, landed nice fish in various scenarios on nymphs and dries, and I was able to cover a lot of water, too.  There have been a few times over the years when the weather didn't cooperate, but it definitely did this time -- the forecast had been for rain but there wasn't much and the river was in perfect shape.

Resort-wise, the restaurant had better food and a bigger menu than I remember it having; the staff had had some turnover since last year and I noticed my favorite guides aren't there any more.  But we weren't hiring guides anyway this time, everything seemed to be running fairly smoothly, the rooms were comfy, and the fly shop was very well stocked with everything anyone would need or want.  If you haven't been out there, and you like trout fishing, it's worth checking out.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Snakehead

Pretty positive my friend and I also saw a snakehead chilling under the Porter Street bridge yesterday. He tried to entice it was a spinning lure, but it seemed to spook when the lure got too close.

I was only able to catch a few bluegill using a tenkara rod, fishing from the west bank, just south of the pedestrian bridge.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Seneca Creek State Park

My office is adjacent to the park/creek, just north of 270.   The creek generally has low populations of fish due to extreme unmitigated current during flood events - it just gets scoured badly.  However, there are LM bass, sunnies and suckers in any pool.  Downstream there are SMB.   A year ago a colleague of mine hiked downstream a ways below 270 and found where LARGE trout had been stocked, and his sense was nobody was chasing them.  They are not going to stock far from a road, that's for sure.

Has anyone fished either Clopper Lake or Great Seneca Creek within the park?  I am headed up there this weekend with some friends and I thought I would bring a rod with me.  I figure I can use it if we get a canoe to go out on the lake or I can wander off and check out the creek at some point as well.  If you know the lake/creek, I'm wondering if I am better off bringing my 5wt. or 3wt. rod when I go.

Thanks!
