Spring arrives soon to Fletchers Cove and great fishing won't be far behind. While sedimentation will continue to hamper access to the Potomac this year, recent Friends of Fletchers Cove accomplishments offer park users several reasons for optimism.

Here are the latest developments:

  • The sediment and soil sampling project necessary for a maintenance dredging is well underway. DC's Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) has funded and engaged Tetra Tech to perform the work and all of the required permits are now in process. Expect the samples to be collected from the Cove area later this Spring. Lab work and analysis will continue into the Fall.

  • DOEE has issued a Request for Applications seeking firms or organizations to partner with the DC Government in obtaining federal funding for dredging at Fletchers Cove. Grants are available through a US Fish and Wildlife Service program for improved public access to the Potomac River. The RFA demonstrates the success of our years-long advocacy and DOEE's commitment to our mission.

  • Three new wooden rowboats have been ordered by Guest Services, Inc. and Boating In for the concession at Fletchers Cove and delivery is expected by early April. A maintenance contract was negotiated with the boat builder for the entire fleet in order to move this work off site next Fall. FFC has advocated for the continued use of sturdy wooden rowboats out of a concern for preserving an important history. Boats like these, available "for hire" at the Cove, represent a grand Potomac River tradition dating back nearly a century and a half.

Thank you for your continued support of the FFC mission. Our voice has been heard across the many government agencies and conservation organizations we have partnered with to save Potomac River access at Fletchers Cove. More updates will follow soon.

All funds raised to date are to be dedicated to the Fletchers Cove dredging work. Fundraising continues as we await the results of testing and estimates for the dredging project. If you wish to donate now, please follow this link.
