Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} C&O Canal

Marek,
Thanks for the info.  I might have to see about heading out for a day on that stretch.

There are loads of smallies in Widewater, but man they are finicky. A few weeks back they were guarding their fry and easily saw 10-15 monsters (3-5lbs). I think they are now deep and difficult to tease to the fly. I did see some evidence of dragonflies, so the top water bite on the Potomac should heat up over the next few weeks.

Subject: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} C&O Canal

Just in case anyone was like me and looking for water condition status in the canal.  I went out yesterday and parked at Carderock Recreation area.  Found one little pool of water just up the path from the parking lot that held 4-5, maybe more carp rooting in the mud.  Only managed one on the fly, but that is really your only bet from that parking lot.  The two wider sections, one downstream from Marsden and one upstream from Marsden, held a couple of carp, but due to rod limitations/backcast issues, I couldn't reach where they were feeding.  I'm sure if I spent more time there, they would have come into range, but I wanted to check out more of the canal.  That is the only fishing until you hit Wide Water above Anglers Inn.  Didn't spend a lot of time fishing the lake, but the I saw a decent sized largemouth cruising the shallow near one of the rock walls but could figure out a way to get to him.  Bluegill are on their beds, so left them alone.

Anyone know if there are smallies in Wide Water?  I don't see why there wouldn't be.

No fish seen in any of the stretches until hitting the Great Falls Tavern.  There I managed a nice 8-10 pound cat on a crayfish pattern and spooked three or four others on my way up.  Lost of bluegill and small to medium sized bass in the canal on the way up.  I turned around at the Maintenance Building across from Bealls Island and headed back.  Plenty of water above the tavern, but very slim pickings below.

Just figured I would share with those of you who might be curious as to a good location to hit on the canal.
