Stayed 2 days at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV for a work trip that thankfully had a lot of downtime built in. Fished on the resort creek yesterday - it's full of fish, including some very large rainbows. Truly easy fishing - never changed from woolly buggers once I realized nothing was eating beetles or hoppers. Pricey but convenient if you stay on the property. Water felt warm, though, and I would prefer to fish it in early spring or later fall if I ever am at the resort again.
-- Decided to drive the 30 miles up to Gathright Dam to fish the lower Jackson today instead of the resort creek. Great choice. Had never been on this stretch before, and had a good time. Picked up a couple fish on streamers and nymphs, then spent time watching for rises in the slower, deeper water down from the dam. The 17-year cicadas are happening down here, and fish started to hone in on them in the afternoon. Had to change patterns a couple times, finally landed on a bullet-head salmonfly pattern that had enough black & orange to convince several rainbows. Prize fish was a 17" rainbow that rose and rejected flies no fewer than 5 times. Took some long casts and a lot of patience, definitely worth it.
Ran into another fly angler from Waynesboro who was actually throwing a 2-hand rig with a huge orange cicada - he said Lake Moomaw was going absolutely off with the cicadas, and he had been catching carp on them all weekend.
If you can sneak out to get down here, could be good stuff while the cicadas are still out.
