Landed one carp on a floating mulberry pattern this morning, had a few others look at it. Had a few carp look at a sinking mulberry fly, ended up hooking a few catfish. Solid Friday morning before work

Sightfishing NSH in the canal is definitely possible! I've tried it (with spinning gear), though not to any great success, due to sloppy casting and short time. I've done so successfully in the Tidal Basin. Pattern doesn't seem to mater much on spinning gear or fly, to my (limited) knowledge, just something big enough to be food and flashy enough to p*** them off!
