As the Feds don't care about people killing Shad in the spring why would they care if I grow one in a tank. 

Because those same Feds clearly have personal/political interest in keeping the shad fishing open and don't care about a couple of fish tenders here and there.

While many of the prohibited species grow larger than what many people can keep in "normal" tanks, that's not always true.  Also, don't forget that  tropical fish stores sell numerous species which grow far too large for most peoples' tanks.... red-tailed catfish, pacu, arowanas, peacock bass, some SW triggers, grouper, nurse sharks, FW stingrays, etc. etc. etc.

I had a 125 gallon at one point and knew folks with 180s, 265, and one 300 long who could easily keep the larger centrarchids if it weren't for the law specifying that "no bass < X inches are to be kept".  It would be great if there was some kind of exemption for someone harmlessly keeping a few native fish outside of the creel-and-length restrictions. 

Man I need to get back into aquariums.

Maryland this morning so I decided to check out 4MR for a few hours just to see if anything was there.  In the first 20 minutes I had hooked 4 different species, so I decided to snap a pic of each afterward just to see what I could tally. I was there from about 7:30 till 11:00.  

Nothing was big, but it was fun to get out and smell the chemicals.

Smallmouth

Yellow perch

Shad (American?)

Bluegill

Redbreast sunfish

Pumpkinseed

Striped bass

White perch

I *almost had a small goldfish hiding in a snag.....little sucker bit but came off!  First time I've even had one remotely interested.  Saw a few small catfish podded up, but they were moving quickly.
