The ones that I have caught have come out of the back of the Occoquan River in April. The combo seems to be warm day, in the middle of the day, and you will see them jumping around. The strikes have seemed to be reactive strikes. The shad run seems to be going on at the same time. I have caught them on clowsers.
One other thing that I have noticed is that I have had a few bite offs on the strike. It seems that the snakehead take bait from the tail first. It is hard to feel the strike as they are swimming in the same direction as the fly is going.
I have heard that if you find them right after they spawn and the fry are swimming around you can get defensive strikes from the parents as they guard their young. I haven't witnessed this.
