Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Mossy Creek

Those are some great photos Bruce, yeah I've heard its difficult, but I'm no stranger to frustration, thats part of fly fishing if you ask me. Thanks for the tips and I'll defiantly check out both creeks. Ill post an update later if I have any luck!

Josh -

I was just down there last week for the long weekend and have some thoughts for you.  First of all, the permit.  Yes, a free Mossy Creek permit is required on top of the typical VA trout fishing licenses.  You can get that permit free here: https://www3.dgif.virginia.gov/troutpermits/

Second, as others suggested, the Mossy Creek Fly Fishing shop has a helpful website and they're good folks to talk to once you get to Harrisonburg.  They're out on these streams more than anyone and can give helpful advice and fly recommendations.

Third, at least in my experience, Mossy Creek - particularly the public section - can be one of the most frustrating places to fish on earth.  Try not to get discouraged.  You can hook into some great fish there, but it can also beat up on the moral of even the most positive angler.  My cousin and I got skunked there last week.  And I don't just mean skunked, I mean, I don't think I even came close to catching anything.  I spent most of my day clearing moss and river grass off my streamer.  Which leads me to...

Fourth - Check out other nearby water as well.  After the rough day on Mossy, I went over to nearby Beaver Creek and had some fantastic fishing for rainbows.  My cousin and I each landed some hogs.  Beaver's also a spring creek, but in my opinion, fishes a bit more like a freestone stream than Mossy.  The flies that were recommended for Mossy worked great on Beaver.  One note, though, if you want to fish here, there's a daily 4-rod maximum.  You have to get a daily permit for $10 at the gas station about 5-10 minutes down the road from the river, and it's first come first serve, so particularly on a weekend, you may need to get there early.  For more details on where to get the permit, check out the mossy creek fly fishing website.

Here are some photos from my recent trip, with a couple grip-n-grins thrown in there: https://brucethomson.exposure.so/virginia-springs

Anyway, it's all beautiful country, so get out there and don't get discouraged.  Good luck and hope you do better than I did.

Bruce
