Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Casting Instructor Instruction Video (tailing loops)

Jeff - you're not the only one.  I'm there with you buddy.  Carl actually explained this exact thing to me in a previous post (i.e. the final "delivery" cast looking different than your other casts because you're trying to horse it out there and you're forcing the tip path to dip).

Most of my tailing loops while fhsing occur beyond 50-60' and are usually (now) a result of deep wading and me not being able to use a wide enough casting arc for the amount of line in the air.  However, I've decided that deep wading, much like winter kayaking, is a young man's game and I no longer do it.  It's not fun, and fishing should always be fun ;).  Plus, your hamster could drown.

The tailers have become fewer and fewer, but it would be a lie to say they aren't there once in a while.  Unfortunately.

Carl,

Thanks for sharing. For a while, I've had a problem where my false casts look great, then I throw a tailing loop on the final cast when I try to shoot the line. I had recently begun to suspect that it was because I tried to apply too much additional power on the forward cast. My tests were mostly confirming, but this video completely confirmed it for me. Plus, it is great to understand WHY that happens too. Thanks again.

Jeff

I found a neat video.  It is aimed at teaching people to become casting instructors, but it has the best explanation of tailing loops I've seen and their multiple causes.
