{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Potomac Shad Fishing Presentation in Bethesda Wednesday, February 12

Dalton, thanks for the notice.  I think Mike Bailey was miffed by your comment that I spend so much time at Fletcher's.  The truth is, he and my son Alex put in the long hours and phone me when the action is hot.  I'll walk down there with the dog in about five minutes, then try to out-fish them with a fly rod--no easy task.  I do spend a lot of evenings on the river following the American shad run until the bitter end.  It all started in 1970 when fishing buddy Dan Ward and I were still in junior high school.

The presentation next week will include shad fly tiers Alex Binsted and Tom Mann from 7:15 to 8:00.  Other tiers are certainly welcome.  I'll have an update on the state of the American shad run from Jim Cummins of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.  David Policansky will share his techniques for catching hickory shad on the fly rod--now there's a guy who spends a lot of time at Fletcher's!  The slide show is updated from previous presentations to include the many recent catches which were featured in my NCC-TU Shad Reports.  (Join the nearly 800 other anglers set to receive the 2014 Shad Reports by emailing contact@ncc-tu.org.)

Our friends at NCC-TU are hosting a presentation on shad fishing by Mark Binstead. The event is at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Services Building, with a meet and greet starting at 7:15PM and presentation beginning at 8PM. If you don't know Mark, he is probably the only person on the planet who spends more time at Fletcher's than John Bilotta, and his sons work at the boat house. If you want to brush up on techniques and locations to fish for shad, I recommend going.
