I was one of the volunteers last year on Friday. This was WORK - no doubt about it. Rigging rod/reels, tying on hooks, baiting, teaching the kids how to cast, trying to space them out evenly so no one gets hooked, getting the kids to respond to a bouncing bobber and finally watching the HUGE smiles on their faces when they pull up their catch.
-- I stopped by on Saturday with my kids and the volunteers looked way more relaxed - the public crowd comes in smaller numbers throughout the day. The school kids come in big waves, stacked on top of each other (more Murphy's Law with traffic and different schools coming in, and not a lack of coordination).
If you can spare the time, I'd say the help is really needed on Friday - but I'd also say the more rewarding experience is Friday! Truly a labor of love and one that will pay dividends with the future generations.

Hello TPFR members!
I wanted to let you all know that the Family & Youth Casting Call (FYCC) will be on Friday, May 2nd and Saturday May 3rd this year. Last year several TPFR volunteers helped us teach over 700 kids in the DC area how to fish. DDOE, CCA MD and several other partners are working now to ensure that we have another successful event and we would love to have more volunteers from TPFR.The FYCC event is for local school children on Friday, and on Saturday it is open to the public. We plan to have 200 kids on Friday and 400+ kids/parents on Saturday. We net off a portion of the canal and stock it with fish, provide all of the rod/reel combos (spincasting) and bait. We review safety skills with the kids and show them how to cast and then let them spend time catching and releasing fish. Other activities held down on the grassy area at Fletchers include: knot tying, fish printing, practice casting, watershed exhibits, TU Trout in the Classroom tank, and other aquatic resource education activities. The event is held rain or shine! If you would like to learn more about this event and/or register to help out either Friday or Saturday or BOTH visit: www.familyandyouthcastingcall.com . Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.Looking forward to spring!
