Subject: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shenandoah Float Trip
I went on a guided float trip on the Shenandoah River yesterday with Albemarle Angler. It's the second time I used them (and the same guide, Scott) this summer, so you might remember my post from last time. This trip was way better.
I brought my girlfriend this time - a complete novice fly fisher. She had been fishing twice before, last time over a year ago, and can barely cast. Scott helped her out a lot and she was casting pretty well by the end of the trip. What I was most proud of though, was less than five minutes in, she catches our first fish of the trip... An 18-20" smallmouth on a popper. Unfortunately, we never really went over the "what to do to get a fish in the net" thing, and as the guide was about to net it, it jumped boatside as she dropped the rod tip and threw the hook. Morning action was pretty steady, and afternoon was intermittent. Almost 100% of action was topwater, but surprisingly, they wouldn't touch blue poppers. We caught a really good number of fish, and a lot of quality fish - according to the guide, the most quality fish in one trip yet this year. I attached a picture of the two best fish I got... a pig of a smallmouth and a hog of a largemouth. The smallmouths were really getting fat, so it was a great sign that they are recovering nicely after the fish kill from a few years back.
