{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Gunpowder or Mossy?

I managed not to make it to either this past weekend, but will make a go of mossy this weekend. Thanks for the tips Rob and  Danny.

I've never been to Mossy, but I was on the Gunpowder yesterday at Masemore.  I caught an 8" brookie and a brown (I'm still pretty new) and one fallfish.  The water felt really nice and cool through my waders.  The folks at Backwater Angler in Monkton told me that small green hoppers and foam beetles worked the best, I lost both beetles to trout because I stupidly was using a pretty tattered 6x tippet.

I switched that out and then hooked into a beautiful 14" brown with the hopper and it did a couple of beautiful jumps before I brought her to net.  Another guy I talked to said he caught a half dozen on a 16 caddis, all on the surface.

Super easy wading, although the trails are becoming a little harder to keep track of.  The raspberries on both sides make the hike a little better though.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Saturday Fishing - Potomac River

Fairfax's Riverbend Regional Park is nice and wadeable, I was there for the first time this past Saturday acquainting a friend with spin fishing for bass - we only caught one smallie, but that's okay since we were mostly into shooting the breeze until noon time. That day, Little Falls gage was about 3.6 and dropping, water temp mid 80s and Point of Rocks was 2.5 and dropping too. As of right now the gage height at both locations continues to drop and the water's cooler, so conditions ought to be decent come Saturday. I may escape on Friday to the other side of the river at Violette's Lock if I can get a visit to the dentist and lawn mowing done expeditiously. ;-)

Riverbend also rents boats, canoes and kayaks, but I didn't look too closely at the rates. You can check with the park authority, http://1.usa.gov/13mtif1  I'm sure you 'll get plenty of other comments on Riverbend from TPFRodders

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Saturday Fishing - Potomac River

Hi! I'm planning to take my girlfriend out for fly fishing on Saturday. I don't have a float, so we'll be fishing from the shoreline. Can someone please provide advice on locations and flies that would help make this more memorable than my last trip? I'm still learning, and for now, she would like to as well!

Thank you!

I'd second the endorsement of Mossy Creek - they have several great guides and a great attitude toward the customer.  We did a full day float on the Shenandoah with Colby, and it was very worthwhile.

sorry, got the link wrong - www.fishingcommunity.org   Thanks for the correction.

This is a separate non-profit organization than Project Healing Waters (which is a great organization, I've volunteered for them as well).  The focus of this group is on all types of fishing versus fly fishing specifically, and includes families and active duty personnel.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Massanutten Guide Recommendations

Not familiar with Massanutten, but if you are trying to tie up a bunch of flies beforehand, check out the website for Harry Murrays Fly Shop.  He does regular stream reports, and lets you know what is fishing well.  He's also developed a lot of flies specific for VA smallies.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Massanutten Guide Recommendations

I would recommend an outfitter rather than an individual guide. If you're floating the river, you'll have to be on two separate rafts. It'll be easiest to coordinate the group through one of those places rather than two individual guides. I'd personally recommend Albemarle Angler (read my review here). Mossy Creek Fly Shop and Murray's Fly shop both also operate in the region. I haven't used Mossy Creek, but I have used Murray's. I think they contract a lot of their work out to local individual guides (at least they did the one time I used them, and the guide gave me that impression), so it may be a little more challenging to work with them.

I will caution you though - the end of October is pretty late in the season for smallmouths. You can get them year round, but it starts getting a lot more challenging that point in the season. Most of the outfitters will have switched to trout by then, and I'm not sure if they'll even still offer smallmouth floats that late.

An article usually reserved for the pages of moldychum found it's way onto CNN.com yesterday.  It is one of the biggest issues of our sport that could not only catastrophically affect a fragile ecosystem, it could also set a precarious precedent for similar actions in the future.  It's good to see this published on the front page, even if buried in an Opinion section.  Press is press.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: SNP stream report

It was funny, my girlfriend was walking just ahead of me, and all of a sudden jumped off the trail and yelped.  There was a rather large garter snake, which I let strike my boot as I explained it wasn't dangerous.  Literally 20ft down the trail, she goes "oh there's another one", and I just about soiled myself when I saw that Timber.  He was really lethargic, and didn't really react until I moved him off the trail with a (long) stick.  I got a good tail rattle shake out of that...

Nice fish too -- I've also come the conclusion that pattern isn't important.  I was at the Rapidan 2 weeks ago and used nothing but bright yellow, flashy, ugly foam beetles and caught several.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: SNP stream report

Brookies in my opinion are so hungry they eat anything.  as long as you dont spook them first.  its taken me many years to finally catch the 9-11 inch brookies consistently.  they are very easy to spook with bad casts, large leaders and just being clumsy in the water.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} SNP stream report

Went hiking in Shenandoah this past weekend with my girlfriend, and brought the rod along.  Was planning on fishing mostly terrestrials, but ran into another angler who said he was having great luck on dry adams, so tied on a 14 parachute adams and never looked back.  The key to these small water trout is presentation and approach, so I don't think the fly selection matters that much anyway.  Caught a few on the adams, but the biggest was holding low under a small falls (maybe 2 feet deep) and kept taking something under the water, so I tied on a zebra midge and he took it on the first pass.  Nothing beats the colors on these little guys.

Also came across this rattlesnake on the trail, so if you head out there be careful bushwacking.  I think its a Timber Rattler, but looking forward to a correction from Gene.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Redfish -- puppy picture

They are exciting fish.  Charleston SC can have some great Red fishing, especially in the fall when they school up. We had a day where the wind was reasonable, the water clear, and the fish cooperative, and it was a blast - all in site of downtown Charleston.  Fish usually run bigger in the fall - 7-11 pounds.

In a lot of cases you don't need weighted flies - and it can help minimize the spook factor - similar with bonefish - if you only have to sink it a foot or 2, it still drops reasonably quickly (guide in the Bahamas used this method)

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} SUP Fly Fishing Lake Audubon

The weather forecasters were wrong today - no rain and the sun did peek out several times.  I didn't have time to make it to the bigger lakes, but instead went to Lake Audubon.  I went out on my SUP and brought two smaller Large Mouth Bass to hand and several bluegill.  Better than nothing and certainly better than doing errands.

I posted more info on http://lifeamphibious.blogspot.com/2013/07/hooked-sup-fishing-at-lake-audubon.html

Chris, Preston, Howard and the Kayak Gang - we need to do another outing again soon.

Hello -- here's a few pics from our weekend trip. This is the hardest-fought fish I've ever caught in my life.  I'll never forget him.   We had a great time -- I wish we could have landed more fish, but to be perfect honest my skill level was pretty inadequate.  Sight casting to tailing fish is a blast -- we had a lot of shots and we both spooked many of them.  Most of our problems were 1.  Not being able to get a fly to a fish quickly enough.  2.  Not placing the fly in the right spot -- either too far to be seen by the fish, or lining a few, etc.  3.  Shocking the rod by failing to get the fly to leave the water surface prior to hauling on the backcast.  Likely I've been able to get away with it up to this point using lighter flies, but a 10' leader and large, lead-eye flies revealed our "suck".  Lesson:  Learn the quick cast a la Bruce Chard, and practice on the water with a 10' leader and heavy flies.  I'm going to drop every other rod and just work with my 8-weight.

Our guide was excellent -- and had a great interest in birding, so we got to do some of this waiting for the tide to change mid-day.  This is very unique and we marked several new birds during the day.

Oh, and Beth had one -- fly in the mouth -- but she set the hook "rod up" style (bass fishing) and *poof* -- lots of bad language, and fish was off like a torpedo.

Bonefish might be my next ambition -- need to get down to the Keys and find a good spot ;).
