{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Rod/technique question

What kind of rod is it - mid or tip flex?  Beginner rods are not necessarily bad rods...  I always have more trouble casting my 5wt full flex when there is any wind - but with the same conditions, I can make decent casts with a 5wt tip flex.

When I was at your stage, I cheated and over weighted the rod (I used the next higher weight line) - made it easier to keep my loop shape in winds.

Being new to fly fishing I have a basic question.  I noticed with my 5wt rod, that I had trouble loading it into the wind.  It seemed my loop fell apart and I could not really feel the rod load when back casting with the find in my face.  I know that sounds counter-intuitive because the backcast with breeze in my face should have helped load the rod.

Either way, my forward cast had no power so I was wondering:
1) bad technique
2) bad rod (beginner rod)
3) combination of the two

Any insight welcomed from the more seasons anglers.

Thanks.

*heading to CO this week for work fitting in some trout fishing outside Denver and very excited.
