Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Fishing Techniques

Personaly.  Just gotta find the water seems between fast and slow.  I make it simple.  I only fish those guys from a little before dawn to about 11am.  I only use 6wt sinking tip line or 9wt full sink line depending what river im on.  For leaders I tie on about 3-4 feet of 6 or 8lb mono spiderwire bass fishing line.  and for flies, walmart sells a dirt cheap spoon.  they weigh less then half of the streamers i chuck for bass.  they are single hook, one piece spoons and no more then half inch in length.  I think walmart sells them for about a dollar a spoon or less.  when one hits, i set the hook harder then anything and hold on for the ride.

hope that helps.  tight lines.

This will be my first year fishing the shad run. Reading some of the messages on the board, and through running into people at the Orvis store, it seems I'm not alone. I've searched through this forum to in an attempt to collect some tips for Shad fishing and give me some spare reading material. Below are all links to different conversations about shad flies, fly rod techniques, etc. on the Potomac. Hopefully this helps others sift through some of the information on the board - it can be quite overwhelming sometimes. I know I didn't find everything on the board, so if anyone else has any other resources to share, I'm sure many of us would find it incredibly helpful.
