Dan made an observation that he likes a 7'6" 3wt. I also like that
length, but when you already have an 8'6" 5wt, I might shrink the length
a bit for 7' 3wt or even 6'6" 2/3wt. There are a lot of choices out
there, but think about what type of fishing you will be doing with it.
Probably a fair amount of roll casting to keep you fly out of the
rhododendrons or other streamside shrubs.

For a pure small/overgrown brook trout rod, I would even consider a 7'
4/5wt.

The joy of fly rods is there are so many to choose from, and there is no
one, "right" choice.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fly Fishing New Zealand

Jereme

I am envious of you. I was in New Zealand in 95. It was the best fishing trip of my life. Every fish I caught was the biggest I ever caught.

I fished the South Island. We were based in Nelson (northern end of the South Island) for 3 days. We stayed at a bed and breakfast and had a guide pick us up every day to fish around Nelson. Nelson is a fun town. We spent another 4 days at Lake Rotoroa Lodge. The Lodge sent someone to Nelson to transport us to the lodge. When we were at the lodge we traveled 10 to 20 miles each day to the various rivers in the area. In all that time we saw one other angler. At the Lodge, the measure of a great visit was a 10 pound or bigger fish! I didn't get one that big, but about half of the guests did. If you have the time and the money for a stay at a lodge like that, I highly recommend it. If not at least go for a guide.

One of the things I found interesting about fishing  in NZ was the way the guides spotted fish. The guides would walk ahead of us searching for fish. Once they spotted one, my buddy and I would take turns working the fish. The fish were so much bigger than what i was use to, spotting them was not as big a problem as one might think. We rarely worked fishy looking water. Almost exclusively we fished at a specific fish. Normally these fish did not seem to be feeding, but generally would take a fly. Almost all of them took drys.

The remoteness of the area was wonderful. One day we fished a river near a village, and the guide was very concerned, because he saw a set of foot prints along the river. He was concerned because someone had recently fish the area that it might spoil the fishing. It turned out to be a great day.

The people in NZ were the nicest people I have ever met. They were extremely helpful and welcoming.

Have a great trip and post some pics.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Small Stream rod/reel recommendations

You should check out the smaller tenkara (fixed line - no reel) rods.  So I don't end up posting a bias, just google 'tenkara' or 'seiryu' or 'keiryu'.  I've got a 6', 7', 9', 11'3" and a 13'-14'7" zoom from various brands.  For any fishing using line weights under 5, I just go to these rods.  For any of you looking for setups for your kids, my 7 year old daughter and 10 year old son are throwing tight loops with the 6' and 7' rods respectively - GREAT teaching tools that are intuitive, simple and effective.

If the water levels out this weekend, but the temps lag in the high 40s, should we expect our local warmwater fish activity to pick up?

Just got through to the Backwater Angler and he says that the water is too high and he would not suggest fishing it until Tuesday.  There may be some smaller pooling areas that we can walk to but the main part is too high.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Day trip suggestions for local Northern Virginia fishing this weekend

This is the gauge at the Falls Road crossing. A gauge height of about 2 ft is around normal in the winter and it's currently over 6.5 feet, but dropping. Median flow for this date over the past 12 years is 122 CFS and it is currently at almost 1,500 (also dropping). I'm not sure at what point it would be considered safe, but it definitely isn't right now. As it is a tailwater, the flow will also be partially impacted by the city of Baltimore. You might be able to find information about planned releases of water from Prettyboy Reservoir by poking around their website.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Day trip suggestions for local Northern Virginia fishing this weekend

i remember 15-20 years ago the fish would actually stick around four mile run for a couple months.saw a couple sickly survivors in june one year.

in terms of posting of stocking information... not sure why, perhaps to limit targeting by poachers, they've been inconsistent w/ posting stocking info for holmes and accotink for the last few years. usually one in late fall and another in mid spring. they've got some knuckleheads tho and sometimes don't do the second stocking until late april giving the fish only a few weeks before the streams become bathwater.

regarding fishing this weekend, you might look into other activities... water is pretty blown out everywhere, tho the urban streams tend to clear out the quickest (one upside to watersheds with a high percentage of impervious surfaces!) and they're going to be doing large dam releases for at least a couple days so the larger tailwaters aren't really a safe or fishable option.

TU has stocked 4MR in Bon Air Park for Kids Fishing Day.  The problem is that after a couple of hours the water is opened to non-kids, and most of the fish are removed.  Some do survive a few weeks/months until the water gets too hot, though.

I think TU also stocked Accotink in December.  The plan was to stock in November but it was too warm still.  No idea whether there is a plan to stock a second time.

4MR does not have a trout population, and it is not stocked with them either. Plenty of other fish in there though that you can target in the winter. I'd think it is unlikely there's a stocking that isn't listed on the VDGIF website, but you could always give them a call to find out any more info about the next planned stocking.

Does anyone else know if there's been a stocking date that website failed to record?  I've been wanting to fish some of the streams close to Arlington (where I live), including Holmes and 4MR, so additional stocking dates would be great to know.  I'm fairly new to the area and have only fished the upper Potomac up by Great Falls, but without a car these days these streams are a lot easier to get to.

Hey Brendan,

Thanks for all the good info.  After talking it over with my friend, we are now thinking to go check out the Gunpowder since he has never been there.  All of my experience has been Bass/striper/Shad fishing using streamers so this is very new to me.  I do have a couple questions.

While I am very interested in fishing nymphs (my new years resolution), I will say that I have never had any success with nymph fishing yet.  Luckly my friend does trout fish with nymphs so he can give me some tips.  I will be buying 5X tippit and some new nymph flies tomorrow since I don't have any that small. I will get some #16 copper john or princes like you suggested but I am open to other suggestions.  I also just checked Orvis's fishing reports online for the Gunpowder and they are suggestions #8 black Matuka, #14 Stewart Spiders, #14 Waterhen Bloa and #14 Grouse and Hert.  I'm not sure what any of these are but I will be checking with the local Orvis store to clarify.

I will definately also go with 3-4x tippet and fish small streamers as a backup option.  You mentioned smaller clouser styles with lots of flash.  It hould like your talking about something between a clouser and a shad dart.  What size hooks are you thinking about?

Now a question or two for everyone.  It was mentioned about the second stocking of holmes and accotink, Does any one know when generally the first and second stocking usually happens? I have a friend that lives near accotink and he was under the impression that they have not stocked that creek in 2 to 3 years. I thought they did but did not have any definite info or dates to give him.

The map shows gunpowder river as a national state park.  Do I need any special licenses or permits other than a MD fresh water license and a trout stamp?

As far as the weather, we are planning to go saturday morning so hopfully the next couple day will not be too hard on the area.

Loads of blue tailed skinks along the stream crossings too. I do most of my sampling below the 3rd crossing. As for being bit by a hellgrammite, I had one in my shoe that bit me back in 1993. I put it on a hook and caught 7 smallies on it before it broke apart. I had one get into my shirt and was on my stomach a few summers ago. Reminded me of the leech scene from Stand By Me.

The hellgrammites ate pretty much everything in my tanks.

Here are some images:

I will look for some more pics from around here. Cory Routh (kayak fishing book author)  told me that all the scuds in the water are a sign of poor water quality.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Small Stream rod/reel recommendations

been facing the same question for a couple years now... wanted 6'6'' - 7' 2-3wt for awhile now, but have done fine with 8' and 8'6'' 3-4wts in the park and similar streams. for better or worse, the biggest pain in casting on those streams, all the overhanging hemlocks, have been thinned out and i enjoy the leverage/reach longer rods give you while kneeling behind boulders/trees. most common mistake in fishing tiny brookie pools is whipping the line too many times to get it back out there after a drift which becomes more tempting w/ shorter rods (at least for me).

TFO, Sage, Winston and Orvis all make excellent rods, but would second the recommendation of stopping by local stores and figuring out not just brand but wt, length & action.  there are some really fun 6'6" 2 wts out there, along w/ tenkara and the sturdier short 4wts that can also be used up on some of the pa spring creeks.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: One of the most vertical movements in years at Little Falls

Its quite high. Normally you can see substrate and rocks sticking out when you drive over this spot. I've seen it up to the fence and over the sidewalk back in the day so it can be a whole lot worse. It shouldn't take too long to clear up.

That brings up a good question--in times of very high water, what fishing spots in the area are still good to fish?  Maybe some of the little ponds off of the billy goat trail?  Higher up 4 mile run?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: CCA-NoVA 2013 DINNER and AUCTION- March 2, 2013

This is cool....we are pleased to feature Shawn Kimbro as our guest speaker for the event. Shawn is the author of Chesapeake Light Tackle – An Introduction to Light Tackle Fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

He is also an accomplished Musician and will be performing some original songs about fishing and the Chesapeake region.

Although he is not a fly guy, he knows the bay as well as anyone, especially around the Bay Bridge.

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Day trip suggestions for local Northern Virginia fishing this weekend

I lived a 5 min walk from 4MR at Bon Air Park where they stocked the trout.  It was nice to be able to walk out and see fish the days they stocked them.  4 years ago I got there a few hours after they put them in.  They put in 1500 trout.  Trout fishing was scheduled for kids the next morning at 10am, then open to the public at noon.

The next morning there were barely any fish at 7:30am.  Poaching is commonplace there.

No fish have been stocked in the last 2 years.

Cheers,

4MR does not have a trout population, and it is not stocked with them either. Plenty of other fish in there though that you can target in the winter. I'd think it is unlikely there's a stocking that isn't listed on the VDGIF website, but you could always give them a call to find out any more info about the next planned stocking.

Aaron,

It looks like Holmes Run was last stocked on 11/15/12 (http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/stock/November102012.asp).  I went through 2012 to see another stocking date, but I couldn't find one.  From what I could tell, the last stocking before this past November's was on 10/21/11.  The list for VA stocking dates that I found is at this site: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/stock/archive.asp

Thanks,

Jordan
