Pete—I use either a OSTP Commando or Rio Gamechanger sinking head with an S8/9 sink tip. Getting hung up on the bottom is a part of getting deep. But that is where the shad are! Todd.

Yes, Spey casting can be used for shad on the Potomac.  In fact it opens up areas on shore that are otherwise not conducive to fly fishing, like Gordon's and Walkers.  But you do need a sink tip to get the flies down.  I've done it and caught shad. I've taken Spey lessons from Regan and he's a terrific instructor.  I really suck at it, but my incompetence at it is entirely on me.  LOL. My point is that if I can catch shad doing it, anyone can.

Perhaps you have heard the term "spey casting".  You have been curious, what does pet sterilization have to do with fly casting?

To clear that up, the sterilization is 'spay', not 'spey', though pronounced the same.  'Spey' actually refers to the Spey River in Scotland.

We will have a focus group on spey casting with single-hand and double-hand rods, and that will lead to a discussion on what is trout-spey. (that is definitely not trout sterilization).
