Four Mile Run...Fishing with a six year old.....
Hey Angelo,
Try this, buy some of the cheapest dry dogfood you can find and a can of Spam. Put the spam in fridge for awhile.  Once cold,
cut the spam into 1/4 inch bits..
On the Falling Tide (after parking in the Mt.Vernon parking lot)  take the path and walk onto the newly revealed gravel .*
Start chumming, first the dogfood (it takes awhile to sink) and then the spam. With the spam just put some on a hook. (a piece of hot
dog will stay on the hook better).  Hang on! A reel with a good drag is important, the hooked catfish Will Run!  before twisting.
I didn"t put my kids on flyrods till about 9 or 10 yrs.
* The geography of Four Mile Run changes from year to year. When the bottom is lighter, you can sightfish to the cats.  They have
poor eye sight and are very spooky...I used  anything black and even tied a black crazy charlie. I have done the chumming thing, it works
really well.  Call me Angelo,  JP 703-409-0981

I'll be in Aurora in Sep/Oct and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge
of the area or fly shops in the area? Initial findings are pretty slim.
Thanks!

The tribs on the south end of the lake get runs of landlocked salmon and
brown trout in the fall. They are pretty dependent on rain but are
probably your best bet. There is also a guy that does fly fishing on the
lakes. Could be worth looking into although i am not sure when the season
is (need fish to be in the shallows).

Ryan and I will have separate tables set up and I'm sure Grandpa Shad will have a table set up too. We will each demonstrate a different style of shad fly.
I will demonstrate how to tie a shad leader (video on my Youtube).
Wear green.

Monday Mar 14 will be our Beer-Tie at Colony Grill.  Shad season is upon us. Come on out and meet your fellow anglers, bring your fly tying material, your fly tying questions, your fly fishing questions. We will focus on shad, answer questions from rod and lines to flies. Always fun to discuss what is the best color for best success.
Festivities will begin at 7pm.

Angelo,
Rob Snowhite's prowess on 4-mile is widely known. He should be able to help
you.
As for your son, bobbers with typical sunfish bait have worked well with
kid fishing events held at the bridge crossing over a small feeder
tributary to 4MR. You'd be standing on riprap reinforcing the bridge
foundation. There is usually a population of bluegills, sunfish at the
mouth of the tributary. The tributary is a short walk upstream from the
parking at the end of Commonwealth Ave in Alexandria.

Hope this helps.
