[homefamilyarticles] MATTHEW 5:11-12

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

Matthew 5:11-12
New International Version
11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:11-12
New Living Translation
11 "God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Matthew 5:11-12
The Message
11-12 "Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don't like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble.

Matthew 5:11-12
Amplified Bible
11 "Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God's goodness] are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil things against you because of [your association with] Me. 12 Be glad and exceedingly joyful, for your reward in heaven is great [absolutely inexhaustible]; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:11-12
King James Version
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly Fishing Islamorada

Yambag,

My second and last post.  Don't knock someone for trying to help someone out. I'm a avid fly fisherman.  Maybe you started on bait, but I've been throwing a fly since I was 6 years old.  Started on native trout in northern Pennsylvania. I'm well into my 50's and have fished around the world.  I tie and make my own rods.  Been fishing the Keys well over 20 years.  I've caught tarpon, reds, snook, bonefish and multiple other gamefish until my hands have bled.  In fact, I don't fish that area so much anymore because it's like shooting fish in a barrel.  Just because you post a lot doesn't make you the "specialist".  Do some research, there's plenty of guides down there that fly fish.  I don't camp anymore, but I stay at lodging around $100 a night and usually can walk or drive less than a mile drive to meet the Captain.   Sounds like you're the source... so hook him up and I'll go back to my rod building.

Tight lines!

The issue is there are guides who primarily bait fish but will take a fly fisherman out.  Those are the guides I would avoid.

I'm going to disagree with the last post.  There are guides in the keys who will take you fly fishing but have never caught a bonefish or tarpon on a fly.  Do you really want to pay $700-$800 plus tip for a guy that has never done what you are trying to do?  You really should look for a fly fishing guide.

The bonefishing around islamorada is improving over where it was a few years ago, but it is still a tough go.  The time of year you are going can be particularly tough as any type of cold weather will result in no bonefish on the flats.  Honestly, that is pretty much the worst time of year to go if bonefish are your target.  Personally if you are dead set on that timeframe i would look to the everglades (thats where most guides will probably push you unless they don't want to make the run) or look more towards the lower keys/key west.   The everglades will be redfish, snook ect rather than bones though.  IF you happen to get a few days of warm weather and no wind in february, tarpon can show up in the backcountry around islamorada.

I don't have a recommendation for a guide.  My longtime guide retired at the end of 2018.  i have a few days booked with randy stallings this may for tarpon.  Based on phone conversations he seems very honest and upfront but I have yet to fish with him.  i have never fished with any of the guides out of florida keys outfitters but if you can't get a good recommendation i would feel safe getting a guide from them.  Regardless they are probably worth a call just to get a feel for what the fishing will be like the months you are going.

I am hoping to plan a trip to Islamorada for a father-son guided fishing trip.  We are aiming for January - February.  Wanted to see if anybody could recommend a good lodge or guide for bonefishing (and whatever else might be targetable) in Islamorada...

I am also not 100% committed to Islamorada, but this is just a spot I have been recommended to go.  Anywhere in the Keys really is where we are looking to go.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Recommended lines for Orvis Access 6wt?

I have an Orvis Access 6 wt  fast tip flex I purchased a few years ago and I have a love/hate relationship with the rod. It fun to cast with a skagit head, but the Clearwater 6 wt fly line I have on it feels like casting a broom. I've toyed around with an old 7/8 wt line I have around and that's a little better.

In an ideal world, this would be my bass and streamer rod for trout, but I frankly don't enjoy fishing it without the skagit head at this point.

I'm not sure if anyone has experience with the Access rods (they don't seem that fondly remembered on the interwebs) but if there's a good line pairing or recommendation for consistency I'd love to try and get some life out of it.

[homefamilyarticles] PHILIPPIANS 1:9-11

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

Philippians 1:9-10
New International Version
9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

Philippians 1:9-10
New Living Translation
9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ's return.

Philippians 1:9-10
King James Version
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

Philippians 1:9-11
The Message
9-11 So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover's life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God.

Philippians 1:9-10
Amplified Bible
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound more and more [displaying itself in greater depth] in real knowledge and in practical insight, 10 so that you may learn to recognize and treasure what is excellent [identifying the best, and distinguishing moral differences], and that you may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ [actually living lives that lead others away from sin];

Recommend contact Bud n Mary's.  They have reasonable lodging for fishermen and a cast of guides.  Recommend back country fishing in the glades.  You'll have to shop around if you want a fly fishing only guide, but all of the guides there will put you on fish.  Look up Capt Jim Willcox at ultimatekeysfishing.com I've fished with him several times and always came home worn out and sore.  Best day of hard work!

I am also not 100% committed to Islamorada, but this is just a spot I have been recommended to go.  Anywhere in the Keys really is where we are looking to go.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anyone Read Game Changer Yet?

No preview on Amazon, and $50 is a little steep for 20 fly patterns.  Any opinions on if the rest of it is worth it?

[homefamilyarticles] JOHN 3:20-21

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

John 3:20-21
New International Version
20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

John 3:20-21
New Living Translation
20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[a]"

Footnotes
3:21 Or can see God at work in what he is doing.
John 3:20-21
The Message
19-21 "This is the crisis we're in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won't come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is."

John 3:20-21
Amplified Bible
20 For every wrongdoer hates the Light, and does not come to the Light [but shrinks from it] for fear that his [sinful, worthless] activities will be exposed and condemned. 21 But whoever practices truth [and does what is right—morally, ethically, spiritually] comes to the Light, so that his works may be plainly shown to be what they are—accomplished in God [divinely prompted, done with God's help, in dependence on Him]."

John 3:20-21
King James Version
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

[homefamilyarticles] 1 CORINTHIANS 2:14-16

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

1 Corinthians 2:14
New International Version
14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:14
New Living Translation
14 But people who aren't spiritual[a] can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

Footnotes
2:14 Or who don't have the Spirit; or who have only physical life.
1 Corinthians 2:14-16
The Message
14-16 The unspiritual self, just as it is by nature, can't receive the gifts of God's Spirit. There's no capacity for them. They seem like so much silliness. Spirit can be known only by spirit—God's Spirit and our spirits in open communion. Spiritually alive, we have access to everything God's Spirit is doing, and can't be judged by unspiritual critics. Isaiah's question, "Is there anyone around who knows God's Spirit, anyone who knows what he is doing?" has been answered: Christ knows, and we have Christ's Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:14
Amplified Bible
14 But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understanding them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters].

1 Corinthians 2:14
King James Version
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

[homefamilyarticles] MATTHEW 6:30-33

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

Matthew 6:33
New International Version
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33
King James Version
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33
The Message
30-33 "If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Matthew 6:33
Amplified Bible
33 But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.

Matthew 6:33
New Living Translation
33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Hebrews 10:30-31
The Message
26-31 If we give up and turn our backs on all we've learned, all we've been given, all the truth we now know, we repudiate Christ's sacrifice and are left on our own to face the Judgment—and a mighty fierce judgment it will be! If the penalty for breaking the law of Moses is physical death, what do you think will happen if you turn on God's Son, spit on the sacrifice that made you whole, and insult this most gracious Spirit? This is no light matter. God has warned us that he'll hold us to account and make us pay. He was quite explicit: "Vengeance is mine, and I won't overlook a thing" and "God will judge his people." Nobody's getting by with anything, believe me.

Hebrews 10:30-31
King James Version
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Amplified Bible
30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine [retribution and the deliverance of justice rest with Me], I will repay [the wrongdoer]." And again, "The Lord will judge His people." 31 It is a fearful and terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God [incurring His judgment and wrath].

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Patterns to tie for the DMV

Thanks for all the recommendations.  I think game changers are a little beyond my skill level right now, but I think I have enough to work on one a week once it gets too cold to fish.  I'm very interested in trying the slumpbuster and the kreelex minnow.

Warm Water-  I tie what I like to tie,  not always what fish want to eat....sometimes it comes together and I catch fish

game changers--  I catch more bass and bigger fish on this fly than any other.

I tie a lot of dear hair bugs too,  but don't catch nearly as much on them.

Again Easy cheap and will catch anything.  Wooly buggers.

Hi Josh,

I've really never tied (although the last 6 months have definitely gotten my interest up), so I really have no idea if these are easy to tie or not. I think you might be on to something with terrestrials, though - a foam beetle might be super effective and seems like it might be pretty easy to tie (but this is just me speculating).

Trout:
Elk Hair Caddis
Stimulator
Hare's ear

Warmwater:
Green Damsel Nymph (I love this fly for bass)
Wooly bugger (might be cool to experiment with kreelex, as well as tail length for leech/lizard/minnow emulation)
Clouser minnow

The other thing that was all the rage about 5 years ago that might be really effective around here was the mop fly - they're just a nugget taken off one of those dust mops and lacquered to a hook, but the internet said they were really great.  I would think they'd be ok for both trout and warmwater and instructions should be readily available online.

Have fun

While stuck at home these past couple of months I decided to try to teach myself how to tie flies.  All of the resources I have been using have emphasized that beginning tiers should focus on the 4-6 patterns that are likely to be the most productive in your local area.  I definitely have not done that so far, but after having varying success with a number of flies (great deer hair beetle that caught fish vs a terrible griffiths gnat that fell apart when I took it off the vice) I started to wonder what would be the best flies for me to practice tying for fishing in the DMV.

Setting aside shad flies, which of course I will be tying in January and February, I'm wondering what the TPFR hive brain thinks are the best 3-4 trout flies and best 3-4 warm water flies that a beginning fly tier should focus on for fishing success in the DMV.

Thanks in advance!

[homefamilyarticles] HEBREWS 10:32-39

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

Hebrews 10:35-36
New International Version
35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Hebrews 10:35-36
New Living Translation
35 So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! 36 Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Hebrews 10:35-39
The Message
32-39 Remember those early days after you first saw the light? Those were the hard times! Kicked around in public, targets of every kind of abuse—some days it was you, other days your friends. If some friends went to prison, you stuck by them. If some enemies broke in and seized your goods, you let them go with a smile, knowing they couldn't touch your real treasure. Nothing they did bothered you, nothing set you back. So don't throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It's still a sure thing! But you need to stick it out, staying with God's plan so you'll be there for the promised completion.

It won't be long now, he's on the way;
he'll show up most any minute.
But anyone who is right with me thrives on loyal trust;
if he cuts and runs, I won't be very happy.

But we're not quitters who lose out. Oh, no! We'll stay with it and survive, trusting all the way.

Hebrews 10:35-36
King James Version
35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Hebrews 10:35-36
Amplified Bible
35 Do not, therefore, fling away your [fearless] confidence, for it has a glorious and great reward. 36 For you have need of patient endurance [to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising], so that when you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Best wading/bank fishing for smallmouth near NW?

If you have a car there are some great small wadable Northern VA streams that you can only do on foot.  With in 30 to 45 mins from NW plus a little hike.   Bull run and Goose Creek come to mind first.

I have that the Upper Potomac has some very good smallmouth fishing; however, I was wondering how much of it accessible without a boat?

I am a broke college student in NW DC and I've been on the search of the easiest water to get to get on a smallie bite.

Thanks!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Best wading/bank fishing for smallmouth near NW?

locally The Occoquan reservoir has them....not in big numbers,  but its fed by bull run,  cedar run and the Occoquan river which all have them,  so they are there also.  (if you can get invited on it I hear lake Jackson has a good population)  Beaver creek in Loudon has a few too.   Outside of that I think you have to go to WV or Western MD like Deep Creek or SW VA like Randolph Jennings.

Not to hijack this bank fishing topic but Art and I had discussed Stillwater smallies.

Is there anywhere around here that has smallies in a lake or pond? I've never fished them other than rivers.

For shore fishing you can't beat some of the holes around Chain Bridge.

The Potomac smallmouth population has fished poorly for a few years for a number of reasons, but Maryland DNR is trying different methods, including stocking, to replace weak spawns and recruitment. We'll have to wait and see if that is enough as we support the efforts of our local Riverkeepers.

If you do have access to a car, but not enough time to get out to the Shenandoah or Rappahannock, let alone the James, Roanoke/Staunton, or New, several of us have found this guide by Steve Moore a handy one to locate access points: https://switchfisher.com/catchguides/wade-and-shoreline-fishing-the-potomac-chain-bridge-to-harpers-ferry/

More generally on smallies, I am loving this book of techniques writing by a syndicate of upper Midwestern guides: https://shop.tightlinesflyshop.com/smallmouth-modern-fly-fishing-methods-tactics-and.html. Most of it seems readily applicable to what we see locally with our favorite non-native species.

Hope to see you on the water soon, and good luck with your studies!

Best,

Do you have a car?  If not you could look at the potomac around turkey run park assuming you can get there.  Worst case you could fish around chain bridge.  Its not awesome smallmouth fishing but probably the best option within walking distance of DC limits. If you have a bike you could pedal along the C&O and look for fishy looking spots on the potomac.  Be careful wading in any of those spots.
