There are a lot of factors on this and I'm not an expert, but for damesels, you are usually tying extended body flys on a short shank. So to get a shank short enough, you want a gap wider than a normal dry fly hook. So an extra short hook would be fine.
The other factor in the equation is wire size. A wide gap usually is lighter (for the size of the gap) and has a slightly different shape.
With all this said. I tie with what I have on hand. I actually tie a lot on inexpensive baitholder (work) hooks when tying cheap foam patterns, which is fine for bluegill, I occasionally will miss a hookup on bass that I think a large gap hook would help with.

Carl,This may be an ignorant question, and if so I apologize. When you start going to wide gap hooks, why not just go up a hook size. For example is a size 6 wide gap 3x streamer hook the same as a size 8 2x streamer hook?Thanks,Kevin--On Sun, Apr 5, 2020, 1:02 PM Carl Z. <carl.zmola0@gmail.com> wrote:I would check how it holds up to water and use before committing too much time (and hooks).I do tie quite a few foam damsels. They are easy and good looking. Just make sure to use a wide gapped hook for good hook sets.Just do a quick google search for videos of the multitude of good looking patterns.Carl--Carl Zmola--On Sat, Apr 4, 2020 at 8:01 PM 'Miles' via Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders <tidal-potomac-fly-rodders@googlegroups.com> wrote:--I hope everyone is getting by with the social distance okay. We've had our hands full keeping my 5 y.o. busy, and we discovered this fun product called 'air clay' -- it's like a moldable foam putty that firms up in the air. It's really easy to work with and lightweight and we've made all sorts of things with it.
We got a new package of assorted colors, and by chance the first packet we pulled out was damselfly blue. So now I'm trying out damselflies with the stuff (I'll post a picture when I've got one done). I was sure somebody must have tried this before, but googling did not pull up anything. Has anybody heard of it? Tried it?thanks,Miles
