{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smallmouth on the Rapidan? (and other locations)

Phew I almost stopped at the confluence on my way back from Richmond on Sunday... I looked at the water as we were going south on 95 on Saturday and pretty much made up my mind then. Plus it was so dang hot it would have been a really sweaty hike. Sounds like I made the right call.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smallmouth on the Rapidan? (and other locations)

years ago I use to do a ton of fishing in the Town of Rapidan with access by the Route 615 bridge.  The fishing was amazing during the month of May and I caught a lot of bruisers there.  I haven't fished that area in 15 years though.  I use to fish right by the dam at Rapidan.  The area was extremely wadeable.

On Monday, August 13, 2018 at 10:04:08 AM UTC-4, Andrew Chaney wrote:
I've seen a fair amount of discussion about smallmouth on the Rapidan on this forum, most specifically from downstream of Ely's Ford to the confluence with the Rappahannock. Since the water level has been so high lately, I fished upstream around the area that Rt 3 crosses the Rapidan near the Germanna Community College Locust Grove Campus. The water level was still pretty high albeit still fishable. I fished for a few hours and got blanked.

My question for the group is: How far upstream is there decent smallmouth fishing on the Rapidan?

Also, other than the usual suspects (i.e. Rapidan, Rappahannock, Potomac & Shenandoah rivers), are there other options to go after smallmouth in Northern VA? For the purpose of the question, I'm thinking of Northern VA of as far south as Fredericksburg and as far west as the East Slope of the SNP.

With all the rain we've been getting, it's been a frustrating season for finding fishable smallmouth streams/rivers without a boat.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: DC PFD Laws - Info from Class

To piggy back on this, there are a lot of end-of-summer sales going on right now for anyone looking to purchase a PFD.  REI, Backcountry, Outdoorplay, etc. are having 25%-off sales on most PFDs, including inflatable PFDs.

I always wear mine when kayaking in the early spring, late fall, and winter.  Depending on water conditions, I'll wear it in the summer, but I'll admit that I don't wear it often due to the summer heat. The inflatables would likely combat this a bit.  May look into it as I am usually found standing in my kayak, and one slip could result in a head injury.

On Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 7:50:03 AM UTC-4, Jeff Cook wrote:
Regarding only PFDs (Personal Floatation Devices) in boating, this is both valuable general info and a bit of a rebuttal of popular belief. Let me unspool what I have learned firsthand...

I finally dug out the book and my class notes for the DC Boating Safety Course I took in May this year at the DC Harbor Patrol. I have an electric trolling motor on my 12ft kayak, so a course is mandatory in most states in recent years. This course was a DC-specific variation of the almost-national NASBLA curriculum. I took the DC version of the class because it is stricter than MD or VA (where I live). It's an excellent one-day class that I did on a weekend. There's no charge, but they do scan your driver's license and issue you a must-carry course confirmation card that's valid in other NASBLA states. Here's what I was told either in class or in the book I'm holding in my hand right now.

NASBLA says that 70% of boating fatalities are drownings, and 90% of those are people not wearing PFDs. Most fatalities had life jackets stowed onboard, were in daylight & good weather, light winds & calm water, in a vessel typically of open design such as a jon boat, canoe, or other boat with low sides, only 1/3 are alcohol related...and victims are typically men 26 to 50 years of age who have been boating for years and know how to swim.

Damn right, I wear it. But according to this book and the marine officer teaching the class and patrolling the water, it is not the law.

Everything north of Wilson Bridge and south of Little Falls is Federal water supervised by the DC Harbor Patrol and the National Park Service and the Coast Guard, under these rules.

In all cases, a properly fitting life jacket (not just a floatable seat cushion) is required to be in the boat and readily accessible for each person onboard.

In only some cases are life jackets/PFDs required to be WORN in DC waters:
- anywhere north of Fletcher's
- anyone under 13 years of age, while underway if above deck
- by everyone while being towed, including skiers
- by everyone if the operator is under 18, while underway
- by everyone using a Personal Water Craft (PWC), such as a jet ski (operator & passenger)

And related:
- must be min 16 yrs to use an inflatable life jacket
- an audible distress signal such as a whistle or horn, is now required on all boats under  approx 65ft
- In DC waters, DC police and Coast Guard DO NOT need probable cause to stop a vessel

And after all that, the book and officers do say that "Vessel operators should ask everyone on their vessel to wear a life jacket whenever on the water". I agree completely, and may decide not to leave the dock otherwise.  But it is not usually the law that they wear them, just that they are appropriate and readily available.

So that's my class info. The one-day class, by the way, is excellent and available to anyone: https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/boating-safety-courses

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anybody fished the C&O canal recently?

The national parks service drained it a while back to do lock repairs. The NPS website says it was drained from Fletchers Cove down to Georgetown, but I reckon they went upstream a bit further 'cos I was at fletchers yesterday and the canal seemed drained a good way further north.

I don't know what lock they stopped the drainage at.

We checked out the canal north from Chain Bridge a little ways yesterday evening. It was fairly murky. Saw one guy with a spin rod who didn't seem to be having any luck.

I was up there a few weeks ago, clarity was alright in spots, but parts of the canal are super weedy right now. Managed one carp. My favorite spots have been muddy since early spring.

Awesome! I have wanted one of those for a while. Good luck!

If you have the space for a canoe, check them out, find a used one, get a west marine credit card (yikes), rebuild it and get out on the water.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin and Snakeheads

I know it's va's department, not DC, but John Odenkirk is always very well spoken on the matter.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R23-ThVeZ8o&t=6s

Blue cats didn't show their huge impact until well down the line.  Snakeheads are well-established, but the current data isn't showing any negative impacts.  Although I want to think this won't change, we need a longer period before we can conclusively say they aren't negatively impacting anything.  I am for both keeping some and releasing others.  I have been trying to catch one on the fly this year and have found them hard to come by.  Of course, if more were released my chances would go up.  Until DC, VA, MD law prohibits release, I think its up to the angler.  I would support limits on keepers though as bow fishing is really doing a number on these fish...

Just the stream of consciousness from one person...

On Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 8:34:38 AM UTC-4, tsta...@gmail.com wrote:
I took a page out of N Elgas' book last night and fished the Tidal Basin last night for the first time with relative success. I was able to catch two small stripers on a white and chartreuse clouser minnow and one snakehead on a topwater frog pattern. Unfortunately, as I was fumbling for my phone for a photo op with the snakehead (and even the other fish) the fish kicked and slipped out of my hands, spit the hook, and fell back into the water. Had I not lost the fish my intent was to kill it but I faced a few problems:

1) I had no knife with which to offer a swift demise.
2) I was in a public area so I felt a little self conscious about putting this fish out of its misery in front of innocent bystanders.
3) Unsure of how to properly dispose of the would be dead fish.

If anyone could provide solutions to the above problems I would be eternally grateful.

All-in-all I had a great time. I think the tidal basin may be my new favorite fishing spot in the DC area as it offers a wide variety of fish species to catch and is easily accessible.

Don't lose 'em,

-Tommy Stackhouse

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin and Snakeheads

I just had a nice conversation with Bryan King of DC Department of Energy and Environment, and I will try to summarize here. His brief answer to the question about the legality of releasing Snakes was "Well... it's complicated."

The biggest point he made was that Blue Catfish should not be released when caught--based on all of the studies that have been done, Blue Catfish are having a major impact on our native fish (Perch, Alewife, Herring, Shad, etc.). He highly recommends that Blue Catfish not be released. The studies on the Snakehead have not yet shown the major impact that we've seen from Blue Catfish.

A few points he made:
  • There is a law passed by DC Council that more clearly prohibits the release of Snakeheads and other invasive species--I think it's this law: http://lims.dccouncil.us/Download/34525/B21-0386-SignedAct.pdf
  • This law has not been promulgated through a regulation, which requires DC Register publishing, comment periods, etc.
  • Because this law is not yet a regulation, it cannot really be enforced.
Bryan suggested that if someone caught a Snakehead and did not have a knife or a way to dispatch, then he did not think they would get in trouble for releasing the fish. However, it is the District's intent to prohibit this release--and this is certainly the recommended action.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Where to fish?

Kevin,
Don't forget that the area is blessed with several good bass lakes, most easily explorable on foot, others with a rental kayak, to get into largemouth bass and panfish. MD option include Piney Run to Little Seneca. While not tidal, they're part of the system and its good to have options when rivers are repeatedly blown.

Cheers

Look for suggestions as to where to fish under the current conditions.  From reading this forums and other DC-specific sites, I have come up with the following possibilities but have questions on each.  Would appreciate any help you real fishermen can offer.

Tidal Basin - assume it is clearing up and early morning is best time.  If I don't have the flies in the most recent post, can I make do with clouser minnows?  Can I use a sinking leader on floating line?  (I have full sink for the shad season, but I'm not very good at casting it)

Gravelly Point - understanding that I need to fish late evening/ night on a falling tide, is it worth trying?  Again, can I make do with sinking leader and clouser minnows, or do I need full sink.

Four Mile Run - Is it OK as long as there isn't a coastal flood advisory?  Any advice on line/leader/flies?

Sorry to be such a newb, but once again appreciate any advice.

Thanks

DC's regulations read like you are required to kill it. Maryland DNR encourages you to kill them but does not require it by law any longer.

Back in 2010, I first heard of the story of Edwin Rist stealing rare bird skins from a British Museum to sell or use for Atlantic Salmon flies either on this google group or another fishing blog. The story was pretty intriguing or odd, as the primary "expensive" feathers I was aware of were chicken saddle hackles for dry flies and streamers. The story of this heist kind of fell off the map and was reignited in this new best selling book.

I thought the book was a great read and included tons of details on Rist, the heist, and speculation on the current status of his loot. There were a couple maddening ignorant references for fishermen, including a reference to salmon spawning and then dying while the book is actually written about flies for Atlantic Salmon--fish that spawn and return; but otherwise I very much enjoyed the tale.
