Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Car break-in

I thought the same thing. I did about a two-block survey around the area looking for anything that might have been in the backpack. Came up blank. I'm not sure they open before they were away a ways.. Live and learn

I know I'm a little late on this, but I would have your buddy comb the alleys and areas around the scene of the crime. Look in every trash can and bin and behind every wall. Chances are the thief quickly realized he didn't have anything he wanted and tossed it somewhere.

My fiancee had a similar thing happen at my old house a few weeks after we started dating. Fortunately, the thief only got away with some dirty socks and sneakers from her gym bag, and insurance covered the cost of the window repairs. A few days later i spotted her gym bag a block away behind a dumpster.

The common theme is that thief will smash and grab any visible bags in a car - they aren't picky.  Moral of the story: don't leave your bag in a visible spot. If you have to leave your bag in a visible spot, just leave your doors unlocked and save yourself the trouble of window repairs.

My daughter and son-in-law live on Bates Street about a block-and-a-half from Mundo Verde. My granddaughter Just Turn 4 in April so I think she does not start kindergarten proper until next year. I could be wrong.

She will be! Kindergarten this coming academic year. The school has a pretty good rep and some cool hands on stuff, and perhaps more importantly, feeds into DC International School, which is both middle and high school and has a very good rep, so far anyway. Most of DC's public high schools suck, and her having some continuity will be good. I'm going through an unwanted separation>divorce it looks like and I want my kid to have as little stress and change as possible.

Does your son and granddaughter like the school? Nice to meet you and sorry about your truck!!

That sucks Bruce! My kid will be going to school a block from there at a charter school which has a good rep—but that neighborhood is sketchy on some blocks. Two or three blocks down was the murder Capitol of the murder Capitol back during the crack epidemic in the 80's, early 90's. A block south of NY and N Cap was a corner that had over 100 murders a year for a few years running if I remember right.

On the other hand, lots of blocks around there now are great. Hot place to buy.

I had a similar experience about 2 years ago while parked around Q Street and North Capitol. After babysitting my granddaughter, I came out to find the curb side passenger window of my little Toyota smashed and a small backpack missing. The backpack contained gold prospecting equipment such as a sluice, gold pans shovel xcetera. I am sure the kid that busted my window went down the street zipped open the pack and had a what the f*** moment when he saw all the dirty gritty stuff that was inside the pack and there were no electronics in the pack. I'm sure the thief that took the fly fishing bag had a similar experience because I'm sure he was not stealing the bag to get the flies. I really liked the old backpack that was stolen and had to go to eBay to find one old enough to be the same style. It also cost me about $75 to get a rear window from a junkyard and several hours to install the window. All in all I was probably out $300. When I visit my daughter now I try to remember to take everything out of the back of my car. It's a Ford Escape hatchback and most everything is visible. Personally I would just as soon not visit the District ever again but I do have family there.

My good friend and next-door neighbor, Joe Dahut, had his window smashed yesterday during the rain storms while parked downtown in a heavily-trafficked retail area of the city. The heartless crook took his SIMMS hip bag which included all his licenses, fly boxes, flies, terminal tackle, and other fly fishing essentials.  He also caused hundreds of dollars of damage to the car, I assume. Luckily, the crook left behind his fly rods, reels, and a bunch of other equipment. I wanted to quickly post here should this bag somehow turn up on eBay or craigslist. Who knows, maybe someone is dumb enough to walk into a fly shop with it, or actually is a fly fisherman who had a lack of good judgement and stole it for their own use (I sure hope not!). Either way, this also serves as a PSA to keep any gear out of sight as best as possible regardless of where you're parked.

If you'd like to help Joe out in restocking his fly boxes and terminal tackle, you can reach out to him on Instagram at @joedahut - I'm trying to get him out to a beer tie as well!

Thanks!
Evan
