{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} North Myrtle Beach (House Creek)

I'm heading to North Myrtle Beach near House Creek for the week of 4 july.  Taking my kayak.

Anyone fished here?  I'm assuming redfish, sea trout, and some other suprises (tarpon reportedly around).  Any tips appreciated.

Any good bluegill ponds for kids around?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Brook Trout Movements in the Savage

WOW!  Amazing how far some of those fish moved.  Thanks for sharing, I love reading this kinds of studies and wish they were done more often.

I've always felt that people underestimate the height of barriers that fish can get around, this study supports that. Makes sense when you see the typical 3-5 ft high waterfall in SNP with fish thriving above and below.

We just booked a weekend at my cousins place at the shore. My priority is a sandwich here http://franksdelinj.com/ and maybe some surf fishing.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: advice needed: 4 days in Ithaca, NY

I used to fish the finger lakes quite a bit.  Most of the streams flowing into the south end of Cayuga get runs of trout and salmon in the fall and spring, but there are not likely to be any around this time of year.  If you are interested in trout, one option would be salmon creek about the falls.  It is mostly a stocked fishery but I used to do ok up there.  If you want wild fish, Cayuga inlet will have juevenile rainbows that might get up to 8 or 9 inches.  There are tons of public fishing areas and there will be absolutely no one up there fishing.  I never fished Fall Creek above the falls, but I believe they stock up there.  Those three streams are all within a 10-15 minute drive from Ithaca and receive virtually no pressure outside of the spring run or stocking.  Fall Creek flows right through town/Cornell and is worth stopping by just to check out the falls.

As far as the lake itself, you are generally going to need a boat.  One spot that used to be popular was the outflow at Miliken Station.  It has been years since I've been there, but it is a warmwater discharge that would attract trout and salmon during the colder months.  Not sure what is there during the summer, but I would guess the outflow might still attract fish.

If you feel like driving, Catherine Creek flows into Seneca and probably has juevenile wild rainbows and maybe a couple resident fish.  There is tons of access there was well.

One other thing you may want to look into is the Brown Drake or Hex hatch over on Skaneatles.  This would be right at dark but can bring a lot of fish up.  June is normally the time but it could still be going.

From what I can tell, the lake may be an ok option for bass/pickerel/maybe trout?, as long as I have a full-sink line available, and some of the tributary streams have smallmouth below & trout above their falls. Looking for a little more in-depth guidance and recs, though.

Anybody spent much time fishing up there?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: advice needed: 4 days in Ithaca, NY

I fish Canandaigua Lake a lot and this time of year I have the best luck with bass.  Pickerel will bite, but fall and early spring is much better for them.  I don't have too much experience with the trout up there, but i'd imagine most of them have moved back into the lakes by now and are getting down deep. The same can be said for the lakers.  This time of year, you'd have to go out trolling deep.  Closer to Ithica is Waneta lake, a small one at the base of Keuka.  I grew up pounding this lake for bass.  It's an amazing fishery, buy horribly weedy.  I haven't ever fly fished it, but topwater at dawn dusk used to be the ticket with chuggers, jitterbugs, and poppers.  Whatever you would throw should either float or have a weed guard.  With all these lakes, I have the best luck around point and creek mouths where there is ample grass. Fish along drop-offs.  Clousers and crayfish patterns have been my late morning early evening ticket while I use poppers and big foam bugs at night.  Many of these lakes get busy during the day and the fisheries have certainly suffered for it, but you should be able to at least get into a few bass, a slew of rock bass, yellow perch, and maybe a few other critters.

Sorry to say I don't have any Ithica specific intel, so worth calling some tackle shops.

Gregg

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rock Creek Park

Had some fun going after smallmouth and bluegill in Rock Creek Park. The summer vegetation was rough, lost all the woolly buggers I tied last week and had a heckuva time getting to the water with a fly rod in some spots. There's some big catfish near the Calvert Street bridge but they have great visibility to every approach to the water, just trying to see the water from the trail spooks them. I'll be trying to solve that puzzle the rest of the summer if anyone has any suggestions.

The lower Deschutes is a 90 mile tailwater below lake billy chinook north of bend.  No brown, all redsides.  I've caught very hot, early steelhead as early as mid august when I lived out there, though unusual versus the norm.  John Hazel a great guide.    Good nymphing all day long (whitefish also there), and some good caddis hatches if you catch them.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Guides in Oregon

Afternoon y'all,

I'm going on a family vacation out to Oregon, beginning of August, right near Black Butte. Does anyone here have any experience with guides in or around this area? Any advice or insights for good streams or rivers in this neck of the woods?

Went on Google and found a ton of outfits in Bend, OR - willing and able to drive there.

Anything you've got will be greatly appreciated!

Best,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smallies

Front Royal is good, the rent out Jackson fishing kayaks, which are fun. In Luray there is Shenandoah River Outfitters, which gets crazy busy with tubers on the weekend; if you use them go early and float 1-8.

I was out last weekend wet wading and really wasn't able to cover much water, so I'd like to change up my tactics. I've rented boats from Fletcher's, which are great and may be where I end up again, but I wondered if there were any other decent options out there for angling.

I have mulled over getting a kayak at the boathouse at Key Bridge, but that may be a big hassle since they aren't equipped with a rod holder. I'm even considering buying one of those expensive fold-up kayaks that I can store in my apartment. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hopefully the rain scheduled for Friday and Saturday morning doesn't blow everything out!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: D.C. area boat rentals

Fletchers has a new fleet of Old Town Predator pedal kayaks. You can cover a lot of water in one of these. They are really fast and easy to maneuver and stable enough to stand in while casting. Unfortunately, the pedals also catch loose fly line, which can get a little annoying.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Friday wading?

I was hoping to do some smallie fishing on Friday but with the Little Falls gauge reading around 3.6', that's a little higher than I'm comfortable with in my normal locations. Anyone know if Riverbend can be waded at that level?

I would love to know the names/contact info for local outfitters (and what rivers they cover). Any help appreciated.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned that I think is pretty important with smallies is to cover water. There are a lot of local outfitters that have canoe rentals / shuttle services. If you have a full day to fish, floating a river is in my opinion, one of the most efficient ways to fish for them.

Look for patterns as you start the float and hopefully by the end you will key in on where they are holding, what colors they are reacting to and what they are eating.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Any Suggestions for the Cacapon River?

Good evening,

Heading up near Berkeley Springs WVa this weekend and will likely float the Cacapon Friday afternoon/evening (T-Storms permitting), and then float the confluence of the Cacapon and Potomac down to Hancock, MD on Saturday. Sunday's destination is up in the air, but will likely try and get a couple hours Sunday morning before heading back south.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Rob Snowhite's recent podcast has me interested in trying the Booglebug with woolybugger dropper for Smallies. I figured I'd also try crayfish imitation, and a couple baitfish patterns.

I'll be fishing a 9'0" 5Wt from a Kayak.

Any suggestions appreciated.

One other thought, if the T-Storms come up bigger than forecast Friday afternoon and the rivers silt up, any suggestions on where to find cleaner water? should I be looking to trace blue lines on Google Maps and seek higher altitudes?

Thanks,
Dave

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smallies

If you want to find the bigger smallies, here is the combo:  Deeper water with large rocks and current, the sun is low in the horizon.  Fish a sculpin pattern deep.  MOST of my bigger smallies were caught in these conditions.

Divide the stream into pools.  There are three main sections.  The head of the pool, mid-pool, and the tail of the pool.  If you have a deep entry with good current in the head of the pool you can find a lot of smallies in this area, some mid-sized fish.  Here they are looking for baitfish so fishing a streamer based on the depth of the water works well.

In the mid-pool look for the boulder water I described earlier.  There are also areas where the fish may chase bait up into shallow water in lower light conditions.  The biggest thing to look for is current.  If you find an area where current goes by a grass bed fish a streamer.  If you see an area where current goes by logs try a crayfish.  If you find current going right by the bank and there is high grass by the bank try a hopper pattern in the summer.

The tail of the pool is where you may find a lot of smaller fish.  Fish a shallow running streamer in this area and you have a chance to catch a lot of fish.

Meant to add: look for them in faster water, especially where there are a lot of rocks.  On hot days, pound the banks with poppers, but still in water with current.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fathers Day Fishing

So, I know it is going to be a scorcher tomorrow, but my Dad is in town and I was hoping to get him out early for a couple hours of fishing before it gets too hot.

Does anyone have any suggestions within 30-45 minutes of D.C. where we could spend an hour or two in the early morning? I was thinking we could either walk part of the C&O, or get a boat at Fletcher's, but if anyone had a better idea that'd be great.

Thanks,

Josh

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Watch out for ticks

Having been a forester in the South for a long time and having had a tick born parasite that was caught in time, this is no freakin' joke.

If you have been in  the woods do a tick check. Look everywhere, but most importantly around your beltline and nether regions. Enlist an open minded helper.

If you find an embedded tick, mark that date on your calendar. If you have any "bullseye" redness or if you develop flu like symptoms, go immediately to your doctor and tell them you think you have lymes disease and tell them to give you a shot of antibiotics right then and have them draw blood and test for tick born parasites. Test takes 24 hours. They will likely give you another shot and put you on amoxycilin for at least 15 days. If you get it within the first 10 days, you won't have any lasting issues.

I used to wear dog flea & tick collars on my boots (no skin contact!) with my pants over the collars. Worked like a charm for ticks and chiggers. Would only occasionally find one on my neck or face once I started wearing collars.

Got them off then walked out in the more direct sunlight and fished for the next few hours without seeing anymore.

Back at my truck getting ready to leave, taking off my gear/breaking down the rod....the horde of ticks were making their reattack on me with vengeance.  Seems they were in the shaded areas and just swarming in the grass.

All of my snakehead on the fly came from early April when they group in the back of rivers.  I got reactionary bites on them.

I have caught a snakehead on conventional tackle using buzz baits.

I know of people who have caught them on a popper.

Quite frankly I think that the population is down a bit from the bow hunters.  The snakehead have found their place in the system and I think that they should treat them more like a game fish.  Put some limits on them etc.  This fishery isn't going anywhere and it should be developed and protected.  We obviously have the right stuff to develop a world record. They could become a prize game fish.

Bump.

Still looking for some volunteers for this weekend. Anyone able to donate some time and help out would be appreciated.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Watch out for ticks

I almost posted a similar warning the other day. At work the other day, my coworker and I had to locate a stormwater pipe about 200 yards back a brushy utility right-of-way. We were there for all of ten minutes, both wearing "tick-proof" pants, and I think each of us got swarmed by 20-30 ticks. A few made it past the initial shakedown and I found 4 on my legs after I got home.

For perspective, I've worn that pair of tick-proof pants probably once a week for two years, either for fishing or working, and that was the first time I've ever found a single tick on me while wearing them. So yeah, they're bad right now.
