It is fairly common in the country, I'm not sure around here. Many of the places I would want to do this only allow electric motors.
You also have to be careful on what the rating of the motor is. Traditionally it has been a 10hp limit for a lot of rental locations. That used to be the heaviest you would want to lug around, but these days a 10hp motor isn't too bad.
I believe Fletchers allows motors on the boats and I wouldn't want anything less than a 10hp motor.
