Is there any evidence out there to suggest that fish fin cannibalism is a symptom of hatchery life? That used to be my understanding until my girlfriend brought this unfortunate looking rainbow to the net on the Mighty 'Mo in Montana last summer. As many of you probably konw, Montana stopped stocking its rivers in 1974 so there's little-to-no chance that this fish was raised in any sort of enclosure.

Thanks for all the advice. Of course I was laid up last weekend, but this weekend looks like the weather this weekend looks like it is going to be even better, so I will endeavor to get on a river somewhere.I do appreciate the discussion about gizzard shad and needlefish. I didn't realize that the Jawa of fish smelled so bad. I'll do my best to avoid catching them this weekend.

Sent from my iPhoneRob, Other than the negative connotation that comes with the name and the mud label, why do folks hate them so much? they put a nice bend in the rod, but I don't know much about them from an environmental standpoint. Do they have a negative impact on the ecosystem? Too many of them? No predators? Too competitive? I'd love to learn more about them.--Gregg

Sent from my iPhone4MR was really tore-up last time I was there, making it even less scenic if you can believe it. I'm sure the intention is to improve the structure along the banks (I remember the plan being posted here a few years ago), but it had to be said that just about anything resembling structure along the north bank is completely destroyed, and there were huge tarps installed along a lot of the stream (obviously to prevent erosion from the construction).--The usual suspects are still right at the outfall (small LMB, sunfish, school of gizzard shad) but i wouldn't call it an ideal place to fish at the moment.Gene

Sent from my iPhoneThat's great to hear. I'm attaching a photo of what pretty much everything looked like last year. That's also a great point on the poaching. Harder to do it with more eyes on you.--

That area is heavily poached, but there are one or 2 left in the first pool after the damn and maybe one or two in some other places in the creek. Rumor is that there is a nice sized brown hanging out in the pool between the first and second stream crossing, but I have never seen it.Also heard the rumor that there MAY be a sticking of Holmes Run and Accotink in the near future, although I dont know how reliable that info is. Good luck!Brian McGoughOn Fri, Feb 10, 2017 at 12:51 PM, Nicholas Gurley <ngurl...@mac.com> wrote:--I've been fishing on 4 Mile Run when I can get out of work (or if its a little warmer, on the weekends). Good amount of pressure from spin anglers, but I've seen them mostly by the subway/US 1 bridges to the east. I've seen two other fly fishermen the two times I've gone.I had a nice day where I caught 8 bluegill off a Chernobyl ant, and another day I caught 2 large-mouth bass off a Wooley Bugger. If you see me out there, I'm the new guy who has casting problems, but I'm doing my best to work through them!I might be out there Saturday, but I'm also learning to the Accotink (I haven't been there yet, so it'd be fun to scout it out). I've been to Holmes Run, but I went earlier in the winter and haven't been back.

Does anyone have any experience with Four Mile Run in the winter? I thought I might try to hit up the warm water output during low tide.
