Many thanks to all of you at TPFR who have helped spearhead the effort to raise awareness of the threat of loss of access to the Potomac River at Fletchers Cove. Just over one year ago in November 2014, dedicated volunteers formed the Friends of Fletchers Cove (FFC) to engage with the Park and other key government agencies on this issue. Our goal is simple - to plan, fund, and implement a long-term solution to the siltation issue, so we do not lose river access at Fletcher's Cove.
We need the financial support from friends like you to achieve our goal.The Friends of Fletcher's Cove has been working with the Park, citizens, and local and federal government agencies to develop a long-range plan for Fletcher's Cove, including:
- Forming committees focused on growing our list of strategic partners and achieving our goals;
- Finalizing an arrangement with the C&O Canal Trust (the Park's non-profit friends group) to act as our fiscal agent, enabling us to accept tax-deductible donations, which can be made on the Friends of Fletchers Cove Canal Trust web page;
- Developing a short-term plan to proceed with soil and sediment sampling of the material in the Cove and soliciting bids for the work; and
- Submitting an Application to the DC Preservation League to have Fletcher's Cove considered as an "Endangered Place."
We are now asking for your support to implement a critical phase of soil and sediment sampling, a necessary first-step before the Park can proceed with any plan to preserve river access. Please donate online directly or visit this page for mailing instructions. Your donation to this worthwhile endeavor is fully tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.Fletcher's Cove has played an important role in Washington, D.C.'s history. Please help us save Fletcher's Cove and preserve this important access point to the Potomac River.Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or wish to discuss the work of the Friends of Fletcher's Cove.Sincerely,Mike BaileySpokesperson
