I had some success on White Top a few years ago in late May. There are lots of places to pull off and park -- if you're not having success or there are too many other people, just go to another spot. Definitely worth checking out if you'll be in the area.
white top can be. it blows out easily so watch the weather. Down that way is Bull Pasture and the Jackson.
