My awesome wife decided to get me a trip with Matt Miles for my birthday, so after chatting about options, we narrowed it down to a float on the Jackson for trout, the Staunton for lake run stripers, the Roanoke in Weldon, NC for saltwater stripers. I had heard about the striper run on the Roanoke. Once the stripers are in, a 40 fish day is supposedly about normal, so I was salivating for the chance. Matt heard from his cousin they were in thick, so we made the call to run down there yesterday. Well, it turns out the intel wasn't that good and we got there a couple days too early before the fish got in thick. We were on the water before 8 AM hoping for some morning topwater action, but couldn't draw a bite. We floated and floated and floated and I cast and cast and cast, but no fish. We saw about 4 bait fishermen catch some dinks, and that was about it all day. Matt's getting frustrated and disappointed that he brought me down there for no action at all. Well, save the 6 inch catfish I caught on a 4 inch clouser. I'm just tossing and working for my fish. By 4 PM, we still hadn't even had a bite, so he said if it is dead by 6, we'd call it a day. Finally, around 5:30, I get that thunk, and I'm on a fish. A couple minutes later, we have a 6 lb, 24" striper in the boat. That kicked things off and everyone started catching fish. Matt floated me til dark and I ended up getting 6 stripers in the boat. Those saltwater fish sure can put one heck of a bend in the rod. If you get there in the next few weeks, you should be able to light those things up.
