Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Conway / Rapidan - Best access point

For the Rapidan.  I love to fish the parts in the Rapidan WMA and the SNP.  As you drive into the WMA you drop down on the stream with it on your left.  The stream weaves in and out of the SNP and the WMA.  As you drive along, The 3 landmarks a lot of people use are the first and 2nd bridge and the parking lot before the SNP. Up til the first bridge any car with clearance is safe.  I dont take anything less then a truck past the first bridge, it just is a rough road.  Up past the 2nd bridge, there are numbers on the trees marking different camp sites.  I like fishing from spot 10 up till the SNP boundary, but the whole area has fish and is scenic. Once you are inside the SNP area, the stream gets small, as do the fish.  There is a great book on the rapidan written by switch fisher.   I forget his actual name, but if you Google that you will find it.  I have accumilated a few of his books, they are a great reference the first time im on a new stream. I hope the mention of a the book doesn't cross any boundaries, if it does I apologize.

Thanks,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone like to film?

Derek,

Yup! Everything was shot using my Hero2, it was somewhat difficult trying to put such a small camera in good positions to make good shots. There isnt a viewfinder or a display screen on it so you kind of have to know the camera before you can use it efficiently. I think the video could have been a lot better for the amount of time I spent trying to film that day. If I hadn't spent so much time filming I probably would have actually caught some fish!

I enjoy filming though and in the end it was worth it. The Gun Powder is beautiful!

Fished Holmes all morning yesterday with no luck.  Super frustrating.  I feel like I haven't caught a trout in forever.

Well done! - I live on Accotink and was unable to locate fish along the stocked section back closer to when it was stocked a little over a week ago.  I've fished the stocked trout several times in the last couple of years, usually in the spring.  I've found the fish fairly easy to locate, and not difficult to catch, but no luck this fall.  I've also caught stocked fish along Holmes, and enjoy the numerous sunfish further down, and then also the stocked trout by the Animal Shelter (Cook Lake), though I don't particularly recommend it.  Don't go above the head of the stream off Columbia Pike.  As I understand it's private access up there.  Overall, I've had the experience of catching a lot of fish one day, and then having absolutely no luck the very next day.  It's hit or miss, and is much more about finding the suckers than it is anything else....at least for the first few weeks -- in my experience.

If I hike a long ways without even seeing evidence of trout moving around (sometimes they'll not touch a thing but you can at least confirm the presence of fish), I find it pointless and just drive out to SNP, etc. instead.

On the flip-side, I am one of the only fly fisherman (I think) who enjoys fishing the numerous sunfish/chubs in the spring and summer and I can walk to it in about 3 minutes now.

If you decide to try it out, I hope you tear 'em up!  Most people park at Wakefield Park off of Braddock and walk behind the ball park to the trail -- you can't miss it if you just wander around for a while.  You'll come to a much smaller feeder creek at first, but just walk past that.  If you're out early (or at dusk), try to wear an orange (pumpkinhead) hat.

First Ill say I dont know the area all that well, but I have caught fish on Holmes Run the last two days. I park on north chambliss and walk up river a bit no waders needed. You can follow the path then make your way down to the pools. I have not made my way all the way up to the lake but I have crossed 5 of the crossings. I found the best fishing from where the community pool is up to the 2nd crossing. Walk along the bank and find the deep pools, spend some time looking for the fish, enjoy the view but if you dont see fish keep going.

I got out thismorning at 930 and a good portion of the pools I wanted to fish were iced over. FYI you will break off on the ice. For those of you laughing, Im still learning. I found fish hanging under the slabs of rock but they wouldnt take. I started to get action around 11 when the sun made it up and through the trees. They left the rock slabs and made their way to the center of the pools and would travel alittle more. I was told if at first you dont succeed "Tie tie again" and that I did. Silver beadheaded nymphs, small orange eggs and lighter colored dry flies w/ a split about 4' up all worked well. Streamers and top water stuff not so much.

Accotink is next, anyone have pointers? Cheers!

Good portion of them turned on it and had 4 take. Fished from the downed tree by the pool up to the first crossing, 3 hrs.

Im not familiar with the area but through this website and the VDGIF I found my way to Holmes. Also stopping today at Orvis to increase my arsenal I was invited to your next "Beer Tie". First impression of this group is impressive.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Incredible Day on 4MR

Tonight I accidentally stumbled upon a link (from another website) to the thread on here in 2012 the first time a guy posted a photo of a tilapia caught out of 4MR. He said that VDGIF biologists doubted the fish would last the winter...so much for that! Although I'm sure that's old news.

This last Saturday morning I thought I'd try my luck down at Gravelly Point. Casted around the outflow for about an hour with zero luck. Determined not to accept the skunk that day, I drove down to 4 mile run to try my luck there. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and there wasn't a single person on the river. I caught a countless amount of bluegill and three or four smallies. An excellent day.

At about 3pm I decided to call it because the tide was rolling in and the water was getting a little high. I saw my favorite overhanging tree and thought, what the heck one more cast. I threw an olive woolly bugger and let it sink and started stripping... and all of a sudden I thought my rod was going to get pulled out of my hands. It was like being stuck on a log but the log was swimming in the opposite direction. Pulled this guy out. Absolute monster compared to anything I've ever hooked into around there. It was an incredible fight and an even better end to an already awesome day.

It's kind of hard to tell from the shot, but I'm guessing he was about 2.5 ish pounds. I feel like he could have swallowed a baseball without thinking twice. So fun.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone like to film?

Nick,

Sorry for the delay in response, I've been tied up at work the past week or so without much downtime. Love the video! Was everything filmed with the Hero2? It looks like you dedicated yourself to take the required time necessary to set up good shots. I'm always kicking myself for wasted time fiddling with cameras when I get skunked on a trip while filming.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Finally got my grass carp

Carp stories are fun!  Beth and I have landed some in the 20+ pound range, though all were on (secret) jiffy dough bait on spinning tackle, usually with 8-pound mono.  Beth caught a good one on the Potomac a while back and I posted the picture here at some point -- he was hard to lift!

I hooked a fairly large one (maybe in the 10-15 pounds range) this spring on fly tackle (3-weight.....obviously I wasn't planning for carp) and lost him under some bridge pylons after getting pulled around quite a bit in my kayak.  I posted a report about it, and had a 'revenge' of sorts on the next day....though they weren't too large.

Of all the fish I miss catching regularly, carp are at the top of the list.  I've only landed 2 on fly gear (I think?) and both were medium-sized, one of which really had a lot of fight on that 9' rod.  I was literally worn-out after leaning on him for so long....and the repeated "resurgences" after beaching the sucker were ridiculous.

I love carp.  You have a real gem if you have family property with grass carp roaming about in the backyard.  We had some large grass carp at the hatchery and when we drained the solar pond and had to transfer them around to other ponds, it was almost unbelievable how strong they were.  I can picture your delight in fighting one on fly tackle.

Way to go!  I have a similar battle with some carp in a golf course pond near my in-laws' place in Myrtle Beach.  Last year I hooked a monster but he ran me under a branch and broke off.  Next year I hope!

Well I got my revenge today. The grass carp weren't nearly as active, and were generally ignoring anything I threw. I finally decided to switch over to, of all things, a chartreuse egg pattern. That did the trick, and about 15 minutes later, I subdued this over 30" beast that easily weighed 20 lbs plus.

Cheers. Safe Travels,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing after dark

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to take advantage of this awesome weather today and get a line in the water after work.  Normally I would just wear a headlamp, but my wife and son would like to come with me to get some fresh air so I'm trying to think of a spot that has some kind of lighting so they don't have to stand in the dark.

I've been to Cook Lake a few times, but can't remember if there are any lights around the path there.  Does anyone know?

4MR maybe?

Thanks for the post Matt!   So you fish both the north and south side of the river?   Are you casting into the middle, or wading out and casting to the banks?

Thanks again for the info and picture.  Nice fish.

So fun.
