{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Urban lines!

I was very excited to finally see the release of the fly fishing film tour 2013 on iTunes because I haven't seen Urban Lines yet. Their website says it is an official selection but alas, no Urban Lines in the film. So, where can one buy the film?

Thanks

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Rammy and guy from Dennison

I think he's in jail still...Beth posted for me.  Some gal working at the Western Sizzler was coming for him, but that's the last I heard.

We were out fishing the other day and the cops showed up and asked for our licenses, etc.

He said "Hey, since our taxes pay your salaries -- shouldn't you guys be dong something else like chasing robbers or something?"

They said "Oh, educated river rats?  How about we haul you down to the station and show you something else your taxes paid for."

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cabo help

And as a point of clarification the regulations do not require a permit for shore fishing (but they do from any boat including a kayak I've been told). That doesn't mean you won't be shaken down for fishing on the beach...

The girlfriend and I are staying at the Hilton in Cabo for a 5 days in late March.  Looks like that's the beginning of the season for Roosterfish, which is on my all time bucket list of species to target.  I am "allowed" to fish one day, and I am planning on surf casting versus going in a boat.  Will probably get up early to fish sunrise and beat the offshore wind, and then go back out late afternoon/early evening if the day permits.

I have a 9 wt setup from my San Diego days, and I'm fairly competent with it.  My question is; is it critical to get a guide?  I know it will automatically bump up my odds, but I also enjoy doing research and trying to figure stuff out on my own.  Is it like bonefish where self guiding is next to impossible?  Or like Steelheading where a guide helps but doesn't guarantee success?  Do all the guides in Cabo fish from boats or is there anyone who specializes in surf casting for Roosters?  The Google has been helpful but any first person experience will be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has any Cabo specific advice please let me know (specific beaches, time of day, flies, places to eat/not eat, etc...).  Thanks,

Tim Donaldson

Kind of what I figured. Keep cash on hand in case some local Policia wants a bribe. Reminds me of my gambling trips to TJ. Thanks Brad,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cabo help

Hi Lane, thanks for the info.  From what I can tell the grand Solmar beach faces directly south, I would surmise (hope?) that the beaches further up the eastern coast get hit much less directly with swells, but that might just be wishful thinking.

Were people surfing near the Grand Solmar?

I saw a ton of people surf casting in the morning and evening but not a one had so much as a bite that I observed. The marlin were a couple miles out so that makes sense. I can't imagine surf casting with fly rod there. The waves were brutal around where we stayed at Grand Solmar.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Dart Feedback

Dave,

Most anything will work when the shad are thick.  Looks like Jeff's fly is a go to Ashad pattern with the perfect hook. You may want to find chartreuse or green to work into your dart body. My experience has been the flashabou like tail is a must.

Dave, I haven't fished anything similar, but like you said, can't hurt to try! My go-to pattern is stolen from Rob Snowhite, and doesn't require any chenille at all. It's simply silver flash for the tail, bright pink thread for the body, clear "gimp" like material over the thread to give it some profile, and dumbell eyes. I tied up a bunch with a chartreuse body as well, but really haven't used them much since pink tends to be so productive.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad Dart Feedback

Dave, I haven't fished anything similar, but like you said, can't hurt to try! My go-to pattern is stolen from Rob Snowhite, and doesn't require any chenille at all. It's simply silver flash for the tail, bright pink thread for the body, clear "gimp" like material over the thread to give it some profile, and dumbell eyes. I tied up a bunch with a chartreuse body as well, but really haven't used them much since pink tends to be so productive.

I've been starting to get excited about the shad run and have been tying some darts with the materials I have on hand. I don't have any chartreuse, pink, or orange chenille so I went with as much flash as I could get. These are tied on a bunch of 1/32 oz jig head hooks I got on ebay. The tail is tinsel I got from a craft shop and hte body is just wrapped flashibou. On some of them I have this orange flashy stuff I tied in as a collar. They don't look like the one i've seen others use and the only way I'll find out if they work is if I try them but I wondered if anyone has tied anything simliar and had success? If so I'll keep batching them out, otherwise I may go out an buy some of the bright flashy chenille I see on most shad darts...

Thanks,

David
