I can report that in SW VA, the cicadas are fast approaching "deafening roar." I couldn't believe how loud they were already.
On a related note, all of the cicadas I saw in the water had their wings fully spread on the surface of the water. None of my pictures turned out well from my cellphone, but every one had wings flat on the surface of the water at 90 degrees to the body.
