Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 4 Mile Run

Hi Lane,

Re your question about four mile, I am new to fly fishing and a local who was gone from DC area ten years. I'm picking up fly fishing now but to be clear I was using spinning and soft plastics this winter. Thank you all so much for this information forum!

I fished four mile run the whole winter because I couldn't get a bite on any of the lakes I visited. It was very good for me in December and January and parts of February. But starting in March I found it much harder to get bit, I fished mostly the high tide which is very close to or near exact as the high tide times predicted on my Nautide phone app.

The last few times I've gone it's taken me a few hours to get one bite (all west of Rt 1). Over the winter often I would often show up and see schools of bass hitting baitfish at the surface between the paved path/kayak launch and Rt 1 but I have not seen that in a while. I ventured further upstream the other day when the tide was very high and did seem to notice a lot more fish action up closer towards the water outflow. Since this was my first season at 4MR I'll leave it to the expects to decipher the bass behavior but I'm going back to the drawing board and fishing books so I can better understand the tidal system and where the bass schools at 4MR have gone. Suffice it to say you are not the v online having terrible getting bit at 4MR right now. I've moved back to fishing the lakes that seem to be warming up but will still visit 4MR weekly, but not 5 times a week as I was doing over the winter.

Hi All!

Just moved to Alexandria (from DC) and have been revisiting 4 mile run after a long hiatus. Boy is it different. Thank you Rob for describing all those changes in your post back in December.

My experience thus far has been frustrating. I fished between the Mt Vernon and Route 1 bridges for 12 hours this week, spread over several days, but didn't get a bite. In fact, the only aquatic life I saw were bait fish and the occasional carp, breaching the surface.

Has anyone else had success of late?

There've been tons of anglers on the water.

Also, looking back through the archives, I saw that the tide is 'earlier' than the River? What precisely does that mean? If tides.org says high tide in Alexandria is at 5:31pm does that mean it would take place at 3:31pm at four mile run?

Lane
