{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: March Casting Church - a change

It's rarely enforced. I've never heard of anyone having issues wading around Fletcher's. You shouldn't be going above your knees regardless.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: March Casting Church - a change

Reagan, I did not know it was illegal to wade, is this only for the shad run, can we still practice casting in the water as long as we do not have a hook tied on? Can we walk in the water to get to rocks to cast from?

Our March casting meeting will be on Sunday the 15th of March, not the usual expected 8th (the 2nd Sun of the month).

We will meet at the usual time, 8am, at Fletcher's, but at the boathouse this time.
As shad season will be almost started, and like we did last year, we are going to focus the church on casting and fishing for shad in the Potomac from the Maryland side.

We will discuss lines and rods and how to cast them. We will discuss flies and rigging. We we will discuss presentations. We will walk upstream from the boathouse and explore where you can cast from the bank to fish for shad. We will fish for shad, there might be a few there at that time.

Note that this is not a guided trip, just individuals sharing their knowledge and experience.

You will need a DC license.  Bring your fishing gear. The shad run a little deep, so sink tips (10ft or so, fast sinking) or sinking lines are very helpful. A 6wt to 8wt rod can cast the heavier sinking lines. The instructors will have gear.

Expect mud and water to step thru, so waders and boots are helpful but not required. It is illegal to fully wade.

This change, just for March, is due to many of the instructors attending an FFI continuing education event during the Lancaster Fly Fishing show that weekend of 7th and 8th.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

I go down to Key Largo to dive, and wade fished when they called off dive days due to swell or I needed a day to offgas from tech diving. I got so frustrated watching fish run away from me that I bought a gheenoe and trailer for $500 in WV gutted it and rebuilt it as a poling skiff with a $500 15hp I rebuilt and remote controlled trolling motor I got as a demo from west marine. Tarpon, especially baby tarpon, are super skittish, I had more luck with the occasional snook, I haven't been back down but based on my experiences on pangas in Mexico and Belize I think I have 100x more chance to get at tarpon with the boat.

I've been looking at Google Maps/Earth for some spots with moving tides, dock lights, lights at night, restaurants with lights, and channels to prep for fishing.

I also plan on chasing peacocks south of Miami for an hour or two on the way down and back. Hoping to meet up with a friend that lives on Biscayne Bay and see what swims around him.

Any suggestions on things to see and do or eat? I plan on stopping at Robbies and World Wide Sportsman on the way down. I'll get a hoagie at Publix to see if they are as good as everyone says. Wife is interested in seafood and fresh fruits.

Based on recent reports I'll be tying up some saltwater versions of the Snowhite Damsel.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Alternatives to the Boundary Waters?

TBH I never found the fishing in BW to be better than anywhere else, but it is pretty easy to get to, and get out and away from people.

If you get wayyyy back in the everglades it'll feel remote but can be tricky to find a pad to sleep on, but close to the salt is where the more interesting fish are, and of course where more people are.

Lots of places in Maine line BW, Ontario, and Nova Scotia are like BW, basically the northern Canadian shield will be near identical and offer similar fishing.

You could also head to Bob Marshall for some bucket list fishing but that may be more rafting and more trouty, and too far away

Are you specifically looking to stay in the US? does it need to be canoeing? do you need to be able to drive to get there? Lots of great backpacking routes in BC that'd put you on steelhead and salmon water, and inland in the mountains there is great trout fishing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a place that might offer a similar feel? i.e., can feel remote, ample canoeing opportunities, good fishing... that's about it :)  Thanks in advance!

So I think I have now made 6 or 7 trips to the glades. And that 2011 trip ranks absolutely last for number of fish caught, and ranks number one...by far...for most hilarious stories and fun!

Brilliant!

If you do a parachute Mr Rapidan one night I may have to abandon my table. Wife planning our summer trip to Colorado today and that's the fly I'm going to need.

We'll have two LED lamps from now at beer tie so it'll be much brighter.

Here are some darts I've been playing with.

For March, I figure there's only one option: shad darts

My recipe for shadness madness (heyo Remick!) is as follows:

Hook - Size 6 - short shank, wide gap is preferable. Like a bonefish hook. I really really like a saltwater hook because they're so strong, but some people might look down their nose at this because it gets expensive. Last year I lost several large, large fish because the hook bent though, so I'm sticking to my guns on this.
Eyes - I tie two different weights, one bead chain and one heavier, so the heavier one will be the lead fly and the lighter one will be on the point.
Body - chenille or anything similar in different colors - if it ain't chartreuse it ain't no use!! (red, pink, orange, whatever else you feel like, would all work - I pretty much only use red and chartreuse).
Tail - I only put white calf tail on my shad darts.

Or, you can always fish a Snowhite Damsel. They slay shad, and bonefish too, as Thomas can attest.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

Rob, The family and I spent a couple weeks on Big Pine Key in 2016 and we kept going back to the Square Grouper bar and grill on Cudjoe Key for eats. No Name Pub on Big Pine is kinda of cool place to visit too although I didn't think the Pizza was as good as advertised (its the bar with the dollar bills pasted all over the walls). The key deer will show up around that bar on occasion. I took my boat along on that trip so that really helped me get around down there, but I'll send you an email of a spot you may be able to access on foot especially after the hurricane went through there a couple years ago and looks to have cleared some real estate. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Key West | DIY Baby Tarpon & Peacock Bass

That's going to be a tough goal, especially without a boat.  I have a friend that caught one wading near the vaca cut. The restaurant with light thing is probably not a good idea.  There are a number of restaurants that have tarpon around them, mainly because they feed them.  It would not be a good look if you showed up with a flyrod trying to catch them.

As far as restaurants, Lorelei in islamorada is a classic place at least for a drink as a lot of guides hang out there.  I like the island fish company in marathon for seafood.  The sunset grill at the end of the 7 mile bridge is a good place to have a drink and watch the sunset.  I've only had oysters and stone crab claws there so can't vouch for food much beyond that but they were good.  Another great and classic keys stop is the no name pub in big pine.  Tons of character there.

Don't eat at the restaurant near world wide sports.  Its good for a drink but the food is not good.

Sandy Morets flyshop is just down the road from world wide and is a great shop.  They may be able to recommend some fishing sports.  if they send you to mile mark 76 flat don't waste your time.

If you are interested in fish other than tarpon i can add a few more wade friendly spots that you can catch fish like snapper or cudas.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Alternatives to the Boundary Waters?

John,

I would highly recommend Isle Royal National park in Michigan for remoteness. May might be a bit early for good fishing though, we visited the park in August and did ok in the inland lakes. Another option you may want to consider is Everglades National Park in FL. It will be way warmer and you will have a lot less portaging. Although camping on the chickees seems very front country I can assure you, once you are off and on the water you will feel like you are in the middle of know where.

Let us know what you end up doing and give us a report!

How about the Allagash wilderness in Maine.  I don't know much about it, but our scout trip did a canoe trek there.

Based on the new regulations, and continuing an unsavory history, Maryland will continue to be the problem when it comes to saving the striped bass populations along the east coast. New Jersey isn't much better.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing with 3 year old in/near DC

So...I am learning the hard way but let me suggests the cheats:

1. Make it fun fun fun time, which means playground time, ice cream, etc. This is an investment in who could be the greatest fishing partner in the future
2. Watch the temp, I froze my son on 4 mile on a sunny but cold day in January. He never wanted to go back despite having a nice cast.
3. Having everything rigged up and ready to go, kids are bursting with excitement and nothing is more painful for them is watching you tie blood knots.
4. Anytime outdoors for the next gen is a win!

Worms and bobbers on Cook Lake in Alexandria might do it.   Or try for catfish in the Tidal Basin.

The TPFR Chapter Calendar has the Beer Ties listed.
Would it make sense to put the Sunday Casting Church events on the
calendar? Having the Casting Church on the calendar may help with
questions about when and where the church is.

A random thought.
