{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Of Monsters

I caught my very first fish on the fly from Hideaway Pond many, many, many years ago.  My father was a Criminal Investigator at Dahlgren and he worked for DOD.

That is an interesting lake with good cover in some areas.  Good fishing from a kayak or a canoe.

It use to be that there were a lot of snakes in that area, especially copperheads.  Be careful!

Depending on the amount of time you have to fish, I'd put Letort towards the bottom of that list. It's nowhere near as good a fishery as it was a few decades ago.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Coming from California

Thought I'd update this since it's been 3 years and 11 days since. I ended up fishing the tidal basin between Basin drive and the Jefferson Memorial. Two birds, one stone. Also, two fish, one fly. Caught two small stripers on a clouser after no-luck with top-water on either side of Ohio drive bridge (not sure if that's the name) for two hours or so. All of that in sight of the Washington monument was a pretty great feeling.

I'm revisiting this now because I'm coming back out in a month (October 23rd through the 27th). I'm also bringing a colleague along who wants to fish while there (he's been to DC many times and so has seen the sights). I'm thinking we'll want to fish the tidal basin again - just for the feeling of it - and then probably travel out somewhere and see something new. We'll have multiple days (evenings actually) to fish which will be nice.

Any thoughts? Any trout?

Also, I see District Angling as the first thing to pop-up on google. Is it worth booking a guided trip given the short fishable hours?

Thanks guys!

Hi all! I live in California and happily call the Kings and Kern rivers in the Central Sierra's my regular fishing spots. I will be headed out to DC for a business trip (I work for a college and am meeting up with the National Science Foundation) - I fly in on September 16th - get there about 4pm - stay the 17th - in conference from 8-5 - and then leave the afternoon of the 18th after a half day conference. It's a major bummer that my first trip to the nation's capital has to be so short-lived. Of course, I want to see all the tourist attractions but my first thought when hearing about the trip? Where am I going to fish? That's how I stumbled upon this group, which, from the little I've read seems like a really cool thing - I wish they had beerties where I'm from!

Anywho, on to my reason for posting here. I am wondering what advice I can get from you all as being totally new to the area. Further, I suppose, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in hitting the water with me - or will be in the same area at the same time? I'm betting my only likely time to fish will be on the evening of the 17th. I'll be staying at the Residence Inn Arlington Rosslyn and I've noticed from your awesome map that it's relatively close to the "Pentagon Marina Upper Inlet" and across the Potomac from the "C&O Canal Outlet."

Should I be trying one of these spots?

Should I take my 5wt (9') trout outfit or bass (7'11") 10wt outfit? Most of my gear is extremely light in comparison (2-4wt).

Do you guys wade in these locations? Is it worth bringing waders and boots?

Anyone want to fish?

Thanks for your time,

Brian Boomer

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Of Monsters

Sweet fish Collin!  Largemouths sometimes seem like they have personalities when they fight. I swear some understand that if they give up they will get reeled in and released faster.

A 21" range bass would typically weigh about 5 lbs as an FYI. But regardless it is awesome to take one that size on a popper!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Of Monsters

Hit the lake again this past Wednesday.

Good assortment of smaller bass (7-12 inches hardy fighters) and some spirited Bluegill.  My big surprise was a whopper of a bass.  He just gulped down my popper, made one jump then just turned into a slab of ham and let me drab him to shore.  He was so big my net was hardly able to accomodate.  I think he was close to 21+ inches long and in the 8-10lb class.

Example of the plentiful smaller ones and the "whopper.

Someone asked if bass were biting top water lures....well let me tell you a story.

If you have govt access to Navy bases...this lake (Hideaway Lake) has monsters in it.  I had heard in the past there were some big fish in here, and I have caught a few smaller ones over the years.  That changed yesterday.

Hit the shoreline and put my green/white clouser minnow in for a few casts since I didn't see any top water action.  Nothing.

Grabbed a teal colored popper and tied it on.  I was fishing ~5 to 15' along the brush banks of the pond.  I cast a few and on my third since switching to top water, just as I was about to pull and start to recast...it happened.  Time slowed down, a "white" shadow started to appear under my popper.  Instantly I thought darn snapping turtle is going to take my lure, then quickly turned to …..are there carp in here.  Then this white mass turns into a bass the size of a METRO bus.  It takes the popper and just lays over and starts back down.  I just stood there completely alone in the woods yelping "Holy S*&T, Holy S&^T...what am I going to do".  I have seen some big bass down in Florida, but not this massive.  It starts to fight but it's more like a block of cement than a spirited bass.  He/she comes up near the surface a few times, it's so big it can't jump clear of the water.  By this time I jinxed myself asking in my head how I am going to get it near the shore so I start climbing down and thinking trophy wall.  Just as I start to roll him/her on toward the shore...the popper comes out and the bass slides back into the water.  It was like the scene in JAWS when the shark take down the three barrels.  I stood there like Quint just stunned.  Nobody will believe me.

About 20 or so minutes later as I work the lake...another monster grabs on.  Slightly smaller than the first...probably a SUV vice a METRO bus.  Same thing...start climbing down and out pops the lure.  Now I am pissed.

I caught a fair share of bluegill (very good fighters from this pond, but average size), and a few smaller bass.

I tie a dark brown popper on and don't get a single bite.

Still working the shoreline....I switch to a yellow popper. That did it.

Over the next hours...I work the shoreline back and the below pics are two of the larger fish I managed to pull out.

Overall...a awesome day on a lake that is strictly catch and release (except for trophy fish...which I can say 110% they are in here).

If you can get here, grab your floating line and popper...fish up and down the shoreline out to about 20' offshore...and have a blast.

So whoever asked if fish were taking top water lures....I can say they are.

Cheers
Collin

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin

0917180748a.jpg

The novelty of blue cats on the flyrod is wearing off quickly,  the slime the get everywhere is trashing my leaders and instantly glues the feathers on my game changers together!!

The Tidal Basis is my personal White Whale...

Once again, skunked at the basis Sunday morning.  Fished the MLK side from the monument on down to the bridge.  I tried top water and streamers from just below the surface to the deep, then dragged some Wolly's and others along the bottom.  NADA!!

I saw fish...and a few even taunted me by jumping free of the water in areas I just vacated and moved on from (they were pretty decent...one a bass, the other a carp).  Granted...it rained Saturday afternoon and the water was somewhat brown, maybe that is what kept the fish away from my flies.

Luckily there was no traffic so my bike ride from the Hill in NE to and from wasn't a hassle.

I get my whale one of these days.

Cheers

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Guide recommendation Aspen?

I fished with John Hunt on the Roaring Fork a few years ago with my wife and we had a great day, very satisfied. jfhunt@me.com; 13143083401.

I've fished out there a bunch of times because my aunt has a house in Carbondale. I would do both DIY and a float with a guide. The Frying Pan is an epic river that is pretty accessible/wadeable. Not so much for the Roaring Fork. Although you could wade fish it, it's just that there's a lot of private land on it so access isn't as good. I would skip the toilet bowl, personally, and I hear they closed it because someone drowned. Lower Canyon to Quaalude Corner was a really fun wade hike for me. I've attached a picture of the board with all the public access on the Frying Pan for your information.

The hatches are better on the Frying Pan with technical fishing, whereas the Roaring Fork is an awesome freestone river with slightly less selective fish (try a Pat's Rubber Legs). Both are a blast to fish. The Crystal River has trout as well but also a lot of whitefish I hear.

Check out Pine Creek Cookhouse if you have time while you're up there too. It's always a beautiful time of year to visit that place, and the food is top notch. There's some fishing near there too.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Habeeb Rocky Gap

Aden, I have stayed there twice in the winter, but rather than fish the lake, I made the relatively short trip to the Savage and North Branch of the Potomac and used nymphs and streamers.  Both have quality trout and if I lived closer, I would love to really get to know the Savage.  Too far from here for me to hit more often.

Unless things have changed, the lake at Rocky Gap was a bluegill/bass destination.  Both times I was there, it was too cold to fish the lake for those species, especially with high quality trout water close by.  Can't help you re the lake itself.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Guide recommendation Aspen?

Jbrolter,

My good good buddy is a guide out there - he works at the Frying Pan Angler in Basalt. His name is Scott Montross - tell him Chad sent you and he will be pumped up.

Also, someone was talking about the mysis shrimp that come out of the damn, that is referred to the toilet bowl, which is all the way up top of the Frying pan just above the section called the flats.

This toilet bowl fishing is absurd, not very fun as it is similar to chuck and duck fishing without any real finesse or skill needed BUT some HUGE fish can be taken fishing there. ... I would suggest spending a little time there just to get on the board then heading down to do some real fishing.
