{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Guiding friends for trout in MA

Hey,

Just a quick report back from New England. I was up there for work and decided to take a day off and fish with a close friend before he has his second kid later this month and I don't see him again for a while :) . He brought along another friend who has a lot of experience fishing in salt water and some freshwater but no experience fishing for trout on the fly.

I took it upon myself to guide these friends and live out my fantasy of being a professional fishing guide (Dan and I had a good conversation about this while I stocked up for the trip earlier in the week at orvis. If you're thinking about getting into the fishing industry talk to Dan, he's pretty persuasive).

Long story short, we all caught fish, I'm the bearded one. Tim has the rod in his teeth and is holding his first trout ever caught on the fly, he was really proud and all day was saying "i guess I'm a fly fisherman now". Ben had a great day also. Most hits came on a conehead olive wooley bugger stripped slow in pools or swung through the seems. I did have one 15"+ trout on an orange sparkle egg fished deep.

Full disclosure, we did keep these fish. I'm normally a catch a release fisherman but we went into this day knowing we were fishing for stocked trout and keeping a few for the parking lot cookout after. Tim brought some fresh back strap venison from a deer he'd recently harvested and we had a pretty amazing sportsmans feast.

All in all we kept 5 fish, caught around 8 and lost a few more. We had the whole river to ourselves (squannacook in Groton MA) and even though it was cold it was a great day on the water.

David
