I don't have a car either, but with my bike I've never had an issue with either a 4 piece rod tube on my backpack or strapped a rear rack. When I fish the canal for carp, i simply strap the rod to the side of the rack, and my net on top. Works great. Photo attached.

So rather than buying a new rod, look at some either fishing specific backpacks that have rod holders or day packs that have water bottle holders on the outside. You'll want one that has a strap about the water bottle holder that can secure the rod tube.

Hey all,I'm curious if you've found a good telescoping fly rod or if there's a blank (i.e., Tenkara) you would recommend to convert into a fly rod? One of the reasons I don't fish more often is that I don't have a car and it's a pain in the butt to carry a rod tube everywhere. Interested in something more commuter backpack friendly but would also allow me to practice my casts. If there's not a good option, I'd like to take a crack at making one out of something else.-Will
