There are discussions going on with the FFI to hold another CI Exam within the Chesapeake Council in 2019. There are 4 candidates that have already expressed an interest in the CI Exam. If you are interested in an Exam in the greater Baltimore/Washington DC area please let Dalton Terrell know of your interest.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by travel rod, but any ~9ft 4 piece rod (kinda the industry standard these days) will do fine in the overhead of a plane, as a commuter rod to keep in a backpack you may want a lighter 6 piece, or a sub 8ft 4 piece rod, or even look into a tenkara or keiryu rod. 

I will say this, I had a 6 piece travel 8 weight for a long time from a reputable builder, I bought spare tip section like they were going out of style and I broke that rod so often I eventually threw it in the trash. I don't think most 6 piece + rods are all that durable, and they are a pain to setup and keep the line guides aligned.

Echo Trip 8-piece rods in 5, 6 and 8 weights are really nice and pack extra small.  With 8 sections they are a bit heavy, but they get the job done.

 If you want to have consistent success you will likely need a depth finder and sinking line. In the cold months bass tend to suspend and/or school up in deeper water. That makes them pretty tough to target with a fly rod, and I have never actually figured out a body of water this way. 

Also, at some point (probably in the recent past at this point) still waters "turn over" where the warm surface water cools off and sinks and the deeper water rises to the surface. It's a significant event that triggers changes in fish behavior. In still water it's all about figuring out the behavioral pattern the fish are exhibiting. Watch the bass tournament tv shows and you'll see what I mean.

I travel to new places across the country a lot for work. I was sick of sitting in a hotel room down the street from decent looking water, kicking myself for not bringing a rod. So, I went and bought a Redington Wayfarerer (discontinued) 7-piece rod for cheap and now I take it EVERYWHERE with me. It breaks down to ~14" sections, or so, which is small enough to pack into any carry on. Shown here next to a 9' 4-piece rod tube. Highly recommend having something similar for travelling for work.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Erie Tribs

Six of us went on our annual Stlhd trip to fish the Erie Tribs of Pennsylvania last week.  Although we did not find to number of stlhd in the creeks that we had in previous years there were enough to make this trip one of the most productive trlips in years.  We started fishing last Monday on 20 Mile Creek.  Although there was plenty of water in the creek the fish were not spread out throughout the river as expected but were in the deeper runs.  All of us hooked fish and I ended the day with 8 hookups but no fish landed. 

It started raining hard Monday night and all the area creeks were unfishable with high muddy water with lots of leaves.  However, by Wednesday 20 Mile Creek had cleared nicely and we found stlhd spread throughout the river.  I had better luck landing fish with 12 hookups and 8 landed.  Everyone else also had a good day hooking and landing stlhd.

On Thursday we fished Elk Creek and fished the water around Folly's Campground.  We found few fish downstream of Folly's but found a good number of fish in the deeper runs upstream especially in all the deeper runs at the base of the cliffs.  We all probably had our best day of hookups and landing fish of this trip here.

Smaller flies, 16-18s, seemed to work better, eg, small single egg patterns, green caddis larvae, small stoneflies, small Pheseant Tails.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Successful Iron Vise at Beer Tie

Big thanks to all who turned out on a rainy, raw November evening to compete in the 2018 Casting for Recovery Iron Vise at Beer Tie!

Rich Farino and Mark Sofman did a great job judging some pretty awesome flies. More than one disappeared into fly boxes after the competition.

Winners: tied for 3rd place Ed Cantow, Lane Thurgood, and Greg DiSalvo. Second place went to Raphael Victor.

I don't have a car either, but with my bike I've never had an issue with either a 4 piece rod tube on my backpack or strapped a rear rack. When I fish the canal for carp, i simply strap the rod to the side of the rack, and my net on top. Works great. Photo attached. 

 Several rod companies makes 5-8 piece rods that can fit inside your back pack. But I've never had an issue with a 4 piece rod biking or walking through the city. So rather than buying a new rod, look at some either fishing specific backpacks that have rod holders or day packs that have water bottle holders on the outside. You'll want one that has a strap about the water bottle holder that can secure the rod tube.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Salmon River Trip

Myself and Regan went up last Thursday for 3 days of swinging on the SR.  Arrived Thursday around noon and hit the water around 2:00  Water levels came up to 1650 out of the dam for the weekend and around 2000 at Pineville ramp and picking up more as you went down river. .  Over three days we covered a fair amount of water including the DSR on Friday morning.  I managed a 12"  atlantic on Thursday in the sportsman pool,  then we were both shut out after that.  Had a great time with Regan and a local guy who I have fish with over the years. It was good to get away from Northern Virginia.  Liked the reference to " uncle Keiths" fly.  wow, where is he these days.  I use to sit with him when we met at the Ra Rah for beer tie.

I haven't tested this theory myself but if I were confined to wading, I'd focus almost exclusively on tributary mouths. If you can get a situation where the Potomac is high and muddy but the river or creek feeding it is just slightly high and wadeable and bringing in relatively clear water compared to the main river...I'd expect them to prowl that transition area.  I have never caught one but I did have one follow at the mouth of the Cacapon and that particular spot is wadeable in typical fall flows.  Currently though...forget it, way too high.  I don't know of any pools on the main river that you could wade fish for them. A lot of the creek mouths have big gravel bars/gentle banks on the downstream side though.

While wade fishing is always theoretically possible, musky do not densely populate areas. In any given pool that may hold musky, you'd be lucky if there's two. I don't recommend having wading be your primary way of targeting these fish.

Contacted Great Feathers and they said they hadn't seen much yet so decided to go to Baltimore county. 

Caught 16 wild browns on streamers and few were showing weak spawning colors.  Probably at least another week or two before it really starts.  Can't speak for the  mountain streams such as Big Hunting.
