Thanks for this Jamie. I don't know how often they are for rent, but there are specialty kayaks which you paddle with your feet. I'm assuming that near surf and/or with all the other noises that you could still fly-fish with them if you paddle slowly and quietly.

I pulled a bunch of sea trout out of the circled area a few years ago with some sink tip line and lord knows what flies/lures. I wasn't in a kayak but in a little jon boat with a low hp evinrude. I can single haul well and double haul pathetically (though I can Spey like a beast!), but to tell the truth I wasn't having to cast terribly far with the sink tip. The guy at the shop (which I of course can't remember now it being years back and a lucky unplanned half day on an exhausting work trip) told me the spot. Can't remember the store but I remember that exact spot. The rest of the day I was pulling lots of saltwater catfish out of there, with float or sink along the mangroves. Those little catfish fought pretty hard, and one of them, a feisty runt bound to have lots of kids, poked a big hole in my Merrill hiking boots! I also accidentally caught a beautiful young hammerhead, too, which amazingly didn't break my rod.

I ended up renting a kayak for about three hours to explore Big Hickory Island in Estero Bay north of Naples. The conditions were tough for a DIY saltwater newbie. High winds created an extreme low tide lasting much of the afternoon. Numerous spots that normally had several feet of water had me hopping out to push through the sand. It's my understanding the extreme harvesting of baitfish, such as menhayden , is impacting striper migration. They will follow the food.

My cabin is in the Crossings community in Bloommery and no its not for rent, not allowed there.   Check wvdnr website for float trips,  there are a bunch.  I have floated about 35 miles of it from cacpon bridge on rt 50 to Largent rt 9.

You can float and wade most of it.  Great smallmouth from May to November.  Gotta watch the river gauges cause it can shoot up quick.  anything above 600cfs is tough to wade anything above 1000 cfs would be real tough to float and fish.  Good access at the bridges,  but all 60+ miles are private shoreline.  I have camped on several properties just by looking up land owners and asking permission.  

Best public access is probably the rt 127 bridge or the Bloomery access in near the crossings if you want canoe/kayak access without a full commitment of a float trip,  you can wade and paddle upstream.  Most float trips are full day length and you don't want to get it a boat under 250 cfs if you have some place to be (lots of dragging).  It is one of the cleanest rivers in the state.  This is a good resource for the science of it https://www.cacaponinstitute.org/PDF/Publications/Portrait%20of%20a%20River.pdf   It is your normal low gradient smallmouth river.  Pool,  riffle,  pool riffle.  Nothing over a class 2 unless you hit it at flood stage. 

River is full of crayfish and helgramites.  You can get 100 fish days,  but probably average 14" bass.  Got quite a few over the years over 18"  and the occasional 20"  fish.  Pockets of largemouth can be found,  lots of bluegill and rock bass,  fall fish,  carp.  No cat fish,  don't know why but there just aren't.  I here Muskie like the Mouth of the cacapon where it hits the Potomac. 

Due to all the rain this is the first year as far as i can remember that i didn't do aa floattrip.

Hi all--rekindling this thread!

I'm going to be in Naples next week. I don't think I'll have time to do a charter/guided trip this time around--and to be honest, I need to practice my accuracy and double-haul before I invest in that--but I'd like to try and get out spend a few hours on the water. Does anyone know of anything that is doable from the beach or generally doable without a boat? 

I've found a few good resources online so far and am planning to hit up a local shop to buy some supplies, but any additional thoughts are appreciated!

View this email in your browser Andaman & Nicobar Endemic Bird Tour March 2nd - 15th 2019 The Andaman & Nicobars are a group of 572 picturesque Islands, mostly uninhabited in an arc in long and narrow broken chain nearly 800 kms long in the SE of the Bay of Bengal.They lie along an arc in long and narrow broken chain, approximately North-South over a distance nearly 800 kms. Their proximity to SE Asia and isolation have made it a hotspot for birding. The hilight of the tour would be the Nicobars which is rarely birded but the real haul is when you do both island groups together which boast a rich list of more than 31 endemics. The beauty is that its proximity to SE Asia throws up surprises apart from species you expect from SE Asia. In our birding here we shall attempt to view all the practically possible Andaman & Nicobar endemics as well as some species that are difficult to view on the mainland. Beautiful Beaches and crystal clear waters make it one of the best destinations for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling. If you are interested you can indulge in these optional activities on free days or with an extension. I just moved from Florida 3 months ago. Boca Grande and Anna Maria Island have some great flats and beach fishing, otherwise, most of the water until you get to Dunedin is way too busy.

I was just at St Pete in Oct and had good luck finding Snook walking along Pass-a-Grille beach.  The Snook were right in the surf zone.  There is plenty of public parking right along the beach on Gulf Way.  Also had great fun fishing the dock lights at night with Capt Dave Dant (727-744-9039).  A good fly shop for local info is Tampa Bay On the Fly.

Last time I was down there I fished some flats off the Skyway on my way to the Tampa airport.  It's rumored to be good for redfish but all I caught was a puffer fish.  Easy access and easy wading though.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Florida Salt Water suggestions....

Wade fishing around islamorada isn't very good but there are some spots. A few you might want to try: flats behind long key state park, beach at the end of seven mile bridge, Bahia Honda state park are a few off a f the top of my head. There is a flat at mm 76 that people fish but I've never caught anything there. Anne's beach is another spot.

Another reminder, Beer Tie is coming up tomorrow. We have a lot of sweet prizes to give out between the raffle and various contests. Dont forget to wear your ugly sweaters, and if you're interested in the raffle bring cash; sorry, we're having technical difficulties on the card reader.
