This was the Saturday before last, I'm a little delayed in posting this.
-- My friends headed out to troll the Chesapeake near Easton on a good sized 28 foot boat. Trolling is fun, but there were breaking fish and working birds everywhere, I was itching to throw some flies too.
While trolling, I went on the bow of the boat and started casting. It was difficult as we were at trolling speed the whole time, and as soon we would reach some breaking fish, there was only a moment before the boat would plow through and chase the fish off. It was also not a good casting platform, and it was windy. It only happened every 20 minutes or so, but when the timing was right and I could get a fly on some breaking fish, it was great. Landing a fly on breaking fish = automatic hookup. It was a blast! I was throwing a red & white deceiver with my Orvis 8 wt on a floating line w/ 5 or 6 feet of 20lb leader.
I probably caught a dozen stripers, mostly small, but one decent sized fish. The bigger fish were all deep. I had a sinking line with me, but with the boat moving fast, it wasn't possible to get my flies deep. My friends caught some very nice 20 + inch fish using down riggers to get their lures deep.
